Residential Care for Teen Boys

Michael’s Youth Home for Boys is a small-size adolescent residential substance use program in Indio, California, operated by the Riverside County Latino Commission on Alcohol and Drug Abuse Services. Serving boys ages 13–17, the program offers a 30–45 day stay in a home-style environment. The Commission’s mission focuses on expanding access to substance use and mental health services for the local community, including Latino and migrant farmworker families, and Michael’s Youth Home is one of Riverside County’s only Spanish-speaking residential options for teens.

Age-Appropriate Treatment for Substance Use

Before treatment begins, teens receive a substance use assessment and, when needed, screening or a full medical history and physical exam. The program is designed for young people whose substance use and related symptoms are making it hard to function at home, in school, or in the community. Michael’s Youth Home offers individual and group counseling, substance use education, and HIV education and early intervention. Treatment incorporates evidence-based approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), trauma-specific therapy, motivational interviewing, and 12-step-oriented support, along with relapse prevention counseling to help teens recognize triggers and plan for high-risk situations.

Family Involvement and Skills For Daily Life

Family participation is a core part of the program. Parents and caregivers can engage in family counseling and education about substance use, which can make it easier to support a teen’s recovery once they return home. Through the broader Riverside County Latino Commission, families may also be connected to additional services such as parenting support or school-related resources. Within the residential setting, social skills development, life skills training, and mentoring help teens practice healthier communication and daily routines.

Access and Ongoing Support

Riverside County Latino Commission offers sliding-scale fees for low-income families, which can make residential care more reachable for households with limited financial resources. Transportation assistance helps ensure teens can consistently get to care. The program can connect teens to outpatient and aftercare services through other Commission programs once residential treatment ends.
