Residential substance use and mental health treatment with detox and specialized programs for LGBTQIA+ clients and veterans. Clients stay in gender-separate housing and participate in daily group therapy, one-on-one counseling at least twice a week, and regular 12-step meetings. Those with co-occurring mental health concerns see a psychiatrist weekly, and more sessions can be scheduled as needed. Along with evidence-based, trauma-informed therapies, the program offers community outings, group meditation, codependency workshops, hiking, nutrition therapy, and yoga. Family members can visit on weekends. Michael’s House accepts private insurance, TRICARE, and self-pay.

Who is this facility a good fit for?

  • Best fit if: Adults who need 24/7 residential care for substance use and co-occurring mental health concerns; want on-site withdrawal management (detox); LGBTQIA+ individuals; veterans; prefer a mix of clinical and experiential therapies; have private insurance, TRICARE, or can self-pay.
  • Not a fit if: Those who need acute, hospital-level treatment; prefer outpatient-only or self-directed care; want a non-12-step recovery approach; are unwilling to participate in structured group and individual therapy; have Medicaid, Medicare, or are uninsured and unable to self-pay.

What to expect

Typical schedule

  • Groups and peer activities: In the morning, clients gather for a community meeting. Days consist of a mix of group therapy, education sessions, recovery discussions, and peer community activities. Twelve-step meetings are woven throughout treatment.
  • Evidence-based therapies: Approaches used by clinicians include cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), motivational interviewing, relapse prevention, and trauma therapy.
  • Holistic complements: Clients practice mindfulness and yoga and participate in recreation therapy and expressive arts such as art and music.
  • Evenings and downtime: Evenings are time for relaxation, connecting with peers, and calling loved ones on the facility phone, if desired. Clients may be allowed to check their personal smartphones a couple times per week.
  • PRIDE program: This program offers an inclusive, culturally informed recovery path for members of the LGBTQIA+ community. Therapy sessions led by trained clinicians include explorations of identity, stigma, and discrimination.
  • Veteran’s recovery track: Clinicians provide veterans with dedicated care, helping them to address issues such as readjusting to civilian life and service-related trauma. Peers who have been through similar challenges work together in groups to help each other heal.

Developing your care plan

  • Frequent check-ins: Clients have one-on-one meetings with therapists and psychiatrists on a regular basis. This allows staff to keep an eye on progress — physical, emotional, and mental — as well as how engaged clients are with their treatment plans.
  • Reassessment: Through what care staff learn in their interactions with clients, treatment plans can be adjusted as needed to make sure things are aligned with clients’ requirements and goals.

Who you will meet with

  • Licensed therapists: Work with clients at least twice each week. This allows for deep exploration of clients’ background, reasons for their substance use, and what therapies may help them the most.
  • Medical staff: Provide 24/7 monitoring and care throughout clients’ stay. Medications for addiction treatment (MAT) can be prescribed when needed to ensure safety during withdrawal management, and to ease symptoms and cravings.
  • Psychiatric specialists: Treat clients who have co-occurring mental health disorders and concerns. Psychiatric medication can be prescribed when appropriate.
  • Behavioral Health Technicians (BHTs): Support clients every day, helping with schedule navigation, making sure appointments are coordinated, and motivating clients to attend groups.

Living experiences and amenities

  • Shared bedrooms: Living quarters are separated by gender and located in separate wings of the house. Clients share a bedroom with one roommate.
  • Comfortable accommodations: The large, spacious home has a pool, hot tub, and shaded outdoor patios.
  • Off-site activities: Staff take clients on hikes and provide transportation to a nearby fitness center for physical activity. Group meetings are sometimes held outdoors among nature.
  • Visitation: Once clients complete the withdrawal management phase, loved ones can visit. Family visits are coordinated with a therapist and usually occur on Sundays, though exceptions can be made.

Aftercare

  • Step-down continuum: Michael’s House offers outpatient programs at a nearby facility. These include partial hospitalization (PHP) and intensive outpatient (IOP). Staff can help clients transition to outpatient care after they finish the residential stage.
  • Alumni support: An alumni program is offered to help former clients stay in touch and keep each other accountable long-term through events, support meetings, and online groups.
