Who is this facility a good fit for?
Best fit if: Adults who need withdrawal management (detox), residential treatment, and/or step-down substance use and co-occurring mental health care; veterans, first responders, couples, and LGBTQIA+ individuals; looking for luxury accommodations; want 12-step and non-12-step options; have private insurance, TRICARE, or can self-pay.
Not a fit if: Those who need acute, hospital-level treatment; seeking a small-group setting; looking for self-directed care without structured programming; want a more rural setting; have Medicaid, or are uninsured and unable to self-pay.
What to expect
Developing your care plan
- First steps: Staff perform a 15–20-minute screening over the phone to determine clients’ medical, mental health, and substance use background and needs. This includes any history of trauma and need for withdrawal management.
- Expert-led plan development: Treatment specifics are put together by a multidisciplinary care team led by a medical director and adapted to each clients’ specific situation.
- Real-time adjustments: Plans are reassessed as clients progress through the program based on how their needs evolve.
Who you will meet with
- Therapists and addiction counselors: Individual therapists lead one-on-one sessions, and over 20 counselors are on staff to help guide clients through recovery.
- Medical team: Medical providers, including registered nurses, oversee withdrawal management 24/7 and attend to health needs throughout the program.
- Case managers: The facility has several case managers, who can help with practical needs such as housing, vocational assistance, and navigating legal situations.
Typical schedule
- Mornings: Clients wake up around 6:00 a.m., then have breakfast and prepare for daily groups. Therapy, classes, and community meetings start around 8:30 a.m. and run until 12:00 p.m.
- Afternoons: Lunch is served at noon. Afterward, clients have some free time to relax or socialize with peers. Around 1:30 p.m., groups resume, with more therapy, skills classes, and specialized programming based on individual care plans.
- Evenings: Dinner begins at 5:00 p.m., then clients participate in recreational and wellness activities, which can vary depending on the day. At 7:00 p.m., 12-step meetings are in session. Clients go to bed at 10:00 p.m.
- Types of therapy: Approaches include CBT, DBT, trauma-focused EMDR, and relapse prevention counseling. These are tailored to clients’ specific care needs.
Living experiences and amenities
- Luxury residence: Desert Hope offers a hotel-like environment, with private or semi-private rooms and private bathrooms, spacious common areas, and outdoor seating spaces.
- Holistic and creative therapies: The program includes meditation, yoga, and fitness, as well as art and music therapy.
- Recreation: During free time, clients can play basketball or volleyball or enjoy downtime by themselves or with peers.
- Emotional support animals: Depending on individual circumstances, clients may be able to bring their pets with them to treatment.
- Flexible technology policy: When not engaged in programming, clients can use their personal smartphones and other devices to keep in touch with family and outside responsibilities.
- Family day: Every other Saturday, from 1:15 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., families are invited to participate in education sessions with clients. Regular visits from loved ones are encouraged.
Aftercare
- Step-down coordination: Since Desert Hope offers a full continuum of care, staff can help clients smoothly transition between withdrawal management, residential care, outpatient programs, and sober living.
- Discharge planning: Before clients leave treatment, they can be connected to outside therapy, recovery meetings (12-step, non-12-step, or both), and medical follow-up appointments.
