What to expect
Developing your care plan
- Client participation: Clients have a big say in shaping their own recovery plan. Staff help guide the pathway, and plans are reassessed weekly by a full clinical team. Adjustments can be made as needed.
- Holistic approach: The facility focuses on physical, mental, and emotional health together. This includes lifestyle considerations such as stress and personal triggers. Discharge planning begins at admission.
- Expert assistance: If a client needs specialized treatment that is not already available on-site, outside therapists can be brought in to help.
Who you will meet with
- Therapists: Clients meet with licensed therapists for regular one-on-one sessions. Therapists also lead multiple groups, which are held every day.
- Psychiatrists: Responsible for helping clients along their mental health recovery pathway, and for prescribing and maintaining medication regimens as needed.
- Clinical team: A multidisciplinary medical and clinical team is on-site to address physical and mental health concerns. Outside specialists like dieticians and faith-based counselors can also come and work with clients.
- Case managers: This team helps with any practical needs, such as housing, employment issues, or FMLA paperwork.
- Family participation: If desired, clients can approve their families to be actively involved in their treatment plans.
“The nursing department, the medical team, the clinical team, the program staff, operations, we're all working really closely together at all times.” — Sean O'Neill, LMFT, Clinical Director at a Connections Mental Health facility
Typical schedule
- Daily groups: On weekdays, group therapy sessions are held between 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Individual therapy can also be scheduled during this time, depending on personal treatment plans.
- Evidence-based approaches: Clinical work includes evidence-based approaches like CBT, DBT, ACT, and trauma-focused therapies like EMDR.
- Support meetings and exercise: Staff take clients to the gym four times a week for workouts and stress relief. Additionally, clients go to outside meetings, such as 12-step groups, four times a week.
Living experiences and amenities
- Private home setting: Treatment takes place in a large, modern, tree-lined house. With a maximum census of six, clients receive plenty of privacy and personal attention.
- Social and recreational outings: Outside of therapy sessions, staff often take groups to the beach, bowling, races, and other fun activities.
- Meals: A chef prepares three meals a day for clients. These meals can be made to accommodate dietary restrictions and needs, as well as any eating disorder treatment plan guidelines.
Aftercare
- Discharge plans: These can involve step-down care coordination to outpatient levels, sober living arrangements, continuing individual therapy, and medication management.
- Early start: The care team starts working on aftercare as soon as a client arrives. The goal is to ensure a safe landing at the next level of care.
- Support networks: Connections made during treatment can include continued participation in local 12-step or non-12-step meetings, as well as links to community resources.
