Who is this facility a good fit for?

  • Best fit if: Adults looking for a small, quiet environment rather than a large campus; needing medically supervised detox with an immediate transition into residential care; seeking treatment for substance use and co-occurring mental health conditions; families who want to stay involved in treatment.

  • Not a fit if: Adults looking for a program that includes a large peer community; who want to transition to outpatient services at the same facility.

What to expect

Developing your care plan

  • First steps: The intake process includes a comprehensive biopsychosocial assessment, which looks at physical, mental, and environmental factors that may be contributing to the client’s substance use. This assessment is completed before withdrawal symptoms become severe when possible.
  • Level of care: The clinical team determines the appropriate level of care by considering each client’s mental health, substance use history, trauma history, and medical needs. Treatment planning follows the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) dimensions to help guide placement.
  • Weekly updates: Individualized treatment plans are created following the initial assessment, but they are updated every week. Doing so allows clinicians to shift treatment to emerging needs, such as focusing on trauma recovery, co-occurring conditions, or relapse prevention.

Who you will meet with

  • Clinical director: The clinical director oversees treatment planning and addresses clients’ trauma and co-occurring mental health needs.
  • Medical director: The medical director oversees detox and medication management, working closely with the rest of the clinical team.
  • Therapists: Other clinicians meet with clients for individual therapy or lead group sessions. Therapy approaches may combine researched-backed approaches, like cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), with experiential therapy, such as beach therapy or art therapy.
  • Alcohol and drug counselor: Clients also meet with an alcohol and drug counselor for about one hour every week. This professional has special training focused on understanding the underlying causes of addiction and how to help clients develop coping strategies and recognize triggers.
  • Nursing staff: Nurses provide care around the clock. During detox, they make frequent rounds, monitoring clients and checking vital signs approximately every 20 minutes.

Typical schedule

  • Morning: After morning medication and breakfast, clients attend morning meditation and process groups, CBT or DBT workbook sessions with a licensed clinician, and relapse prevention groups that focus on coping skills, goal setting, and identifying and managing triggers.
  • Afternoon: After lunch and as-needed medication checks, activities may include beach-based therapy sessions or creative art exercises. Clients have some late-afternoon downtime where they can relax, watch TV, or make phone calls.
  • Evenings: Dinner is served, and clients attend recovery meetings out in the community, including Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and Narcotics Anonymous (NA). This helps them become more familiar with local recovery groups and resources before transitioning out of residential care.
  • Weekend activities: Saturday community outings may include trips to nearby Balboa Park, the zoo, local museums, or the beach.

Living experiences and amenities

  • Home-like environment: Double Peak Recovery Escondido is a small, six-bed home. It offers a quiet, comfortable residential setting. Clients get catered meals and experience a regular, structured daily routine.
  • Activities and outings: Weekend outings allow clients to get out into the community, so they can stay connected to life outside of treatment and practice social skills.
  • Family involvement: Family visitation takes place on Sundays. The facility offers family education and invites loved ones to be involved in discharge planning. In the residential program, access to phones is limited to 30 minutes, twice a day, in the morning and in the evening. A landline is available between groups and in case of emergency. When clients are in detox, they do not have access to their phones.

Aftercare

  • Early planning: Aftercare planning begins before discharge; it includes relapse prevention planning and coordination with continuing care as needed.
  • Peer connections: An alumni program focuses on keeping clients connected to their peers and engaged in recovery after treatment. Plus, clients are introduced to community recovery groups while still in the program.
