Who is this facility a good fit for?

  • Best fit if: Adults part of the LGBTQIA+ community who are medically stable and post-detox (not in need of acute medical detox); looking for a structured, long-term residential program; want frequent group therapy and weekly individual therapy with referrals to community resources; are enrolled in Medi-Cal.
  • Not a fit if: Require acute medical detoxification or are not medically stable for residential admission; unwilling to live on campus for a minimum of 90 days; need outpatient-only care or on-site withdrawal management; use private insurance or don’t have Medi-Cal.

What to expect

Beyond general standards, the facility places unique emphasis on:

Treatment planning and reassessment

  • Phase 1 - Orientation: For the first 30 days, clients focus on acclimating to the community, and learning the program rules and structure. The initial treatment plan is developed during this phase when needs are assessed. Phone access is restricted, and clients can only leave campus using a buddy system.
  • Phase 2 - Stabilization: Clients work on core curriculum requirements and learn to identify relapse patterns and replace old behaviors with new behaviors. During this phase, phone access is restored and clients can leave campus on their own with an approved pass to attend outside meetings.
  • Phase 3 - Supportive recovery: Clients work to rebuild self-sufficiency and prepare for the future. They attend advanced treatment workshops and make plans for employment, job skills training, education, or managing time while on disability.
  • Phase 4 - Extended recovery: Clients make plans to transition out of treatment and strengthen outside recovery support systems. Activities include finalizing sober living arrangements with staff assistance and preparing to transition into aftercare.

Who you will meet with

  • Intake team: Conducts the initial screening to assess eligibility and treatment fit.
  • Assigned "buddy": A peer assigned during the Orientation phase to answer questions and help clients navigate the program.
  • Primary therapist: Meets with the client one-on-one on a weekly basis for deep clinical support.
  • Primary counselor: Meets with the client one-on-one weekly to guide them through the program curriculum and addiction education.
  • Case manager: Assists with practical life needs, including legal matters, employment resources, and job search support.

Typical schedule

  • Weekdays: Clients participate in 3 to 5 groups per day, along with one-on-one therapy, case management, and skills workshops.
  • Weekends: Clients attend 1 to 2 groups per day, and have time for structured community activities, outside 12-step meetings (if approved), and visitation.

Living experiences and amenities

  • Accommodations: Clients stay in private rooms to ensure they have personal space during their recovery.
  • Indoor common areas: An indoor lounge serves as a central gathering hub, equipped with a fireplace and a television. There is also a piano and an acoustic guitar for recreation.
  • Outdoor spaces: The campus offers access to gardens, walking paths, and courtyards with picnic tables.
  • Language and accessibility: The facility offers Spanish and sign language services. Transportation assistance is available to help clients safely navigate their needs.
  • Policies: Smoking and vaping are permitted in designated areas on campus. Visitation is allowed, provided the client has received prior approval from staff.

Aftercare

  • Stepping Stone LGBTQ Alumni Association: Alumni, allies, and friends come together to support current clients through mentorship and fundraising.
  • Monthly alumni gatherings: These include cooking dinner for current clients, movie nights, and other social activities.
  • Regular meetings: Held the third Thursday of each month from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the facility’s multi-purpose room.

Verified Admissions Experience

Anonymous admissions inquiry conducted via phone on February 10, 2026, to evaluate response time, transparency, and patient experience.

When we reached out to Stepping Stone, the admissions team was prompt and transparent. They walked us through policies, scheduling, and who the client will meet with. The conversation felt straightforward and genuine, though issues with the phone connection and a language barrier with the contact presented some challenges.
