Who is this facility a good fit for?
Best fit if: Adults seeking a small residential treatment community; needing treatment for substance use alongside co-occurring mental health concerns; wanting a program with 24/7 structure and supervision with off-site activities; seeking programming that combines evidence-based therapy with experiential options; wanting case management integrated into care; who are comfortable with group settings.
Not a fit if: Adults preferring a large treatment facility; needing unrestricted access to their personal phone; wanting frequent in-person family visits.
What to expect
Developing your care plan
- Medical evaluation: After admission, clients meet with an on-site doctor, who evaluates them for any immediate health and medication needs.
- Planning and ongoing adjustments: The care team works with the client to develop a treatment plan that combines evidence-based therapy, psychiatric care, and holistic approaches. The doctor checks in with the client every week to assess if medication adjustments are needed.
- Therapy access: Clients generally meet with their assigned therapist at least once a week. Additional sessions can be arranged when needed.
Who you will meet with
- On-site doctor: A physician completes the initial evaluation, prescribes and manages medications, and meets with clients for weekly follow-ups.
- Primary therapists: Clients meet with their primary therapist at least once a week and can plan additional sessions when needed.
- Case managers: Address practical needs, including support for court or legal matters and discharge planning.
- Group facilitators: These professionals lead the structured therapy groups that make up the majority of the daily programming.
- Behavioral health technicians: Remain on site 24/7, providing supervision and support.
- Specialized instructors: Outside instructors are brought in for various experiential programs.
Typical schedule
- Mornings: Clients typically attend two groups after breakfast, with a break in between. Groups can focus on various topics, including coping skills and mindfulness. Optional early morning beach yoga is also available.
- Afternoons: After lunch, clients attend two more groups with a break in between.
- Evenings: Dinner is followed on many nights by a supervised community recovery meeting, such as Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) or Narcotics Anonymous (NA).
- Special programming: Mondays may include a beach mindfulness group with optional surfing or surf instruction.
- Weekends: The pace shifts on weekends, when clients may participate in group recreational activities. For example, there may be a barbecue on Saturday, while Sundays include a supervised outing to the beach, movies, or other community activities.
Living experiences and amenities
- Residential living near the beach: Clients stay in an air-conditioned residential home near Capistrano Beach Park. Private and shared rooms are available, and clients share bathrooms and common areas, including outdoor lounge space.
- Recreation: Various activities are offered, including yoga, beach walks, swimming, water activities, and off-site outings.
- Phone policy: Personal phones are held for the first two weeks. Brief daily calls can be arranged through the house phone. If treatment progresses appropriately, clients regain access to their phones, but they are not permitted to use them during groups.
- Family visitation: Family visitation is considered on an individual basis. Individual therapists can arrange visits for local families if the visit is expected to be therapeutically beneficial.
Aftercare
- Case management support: Case managers work on practical issues that could pose barriers to life after discharge, including legal matters, housing, and what next level of treatment is appropriate.
- Other support: The facility also offers aftercare counseling, follow-up and check-ins, and relapse prevention planning, as well as peer support and an alumni network.
