What to expect

Beyond general standards, Connections Mental Health Orange County places unique emphasis on:

Treatment planning and reassessment

  • Personalized care plans: Clients receive an individualized treatment plan upon admission. Because the facility has only six beds, care can be tailored specifically to each client’s needs and concerns.
  • Weekly team meetings: The multidisciplinary treatment team meets weekly to discuss what services are working or not working for the client and adjusts the treatment plan as needed.
  • Expert assistance: If a client needs supplemental treatment, specialized therapists can be brought in.

“When we come in, we assess what their unique individual needs are. Their treatment plans are very unique and tailored to their specific needs and diagnoses and symptoms.” — Sean O’Neill, LMFT, Clinical Director

Who you will meet with

  • Assigned therapist: Clients meet with their individually assigned therapist for one-on-one sessions two to three times per week.
  • Staff psychiatrist: Clients sit down with a psychiatrist once a week to discuss any necessary medication management.
  • Multidisciplinary team: Clients work closely with licensed therapists, case managers, psych techs, and on-site nurses. The staff-to-client ratio is usually 1:1, offering a high level of engagement and monitoring
  • Medical providers: A doctor and other members of the medical team are available to meet with clients when needed.
  • Specialists: Depending on their tailored plan, clients may interact with art therapists, acupuncturists, nutritionists, dieticians, or outside experts specializing in OCD, ADHD, or faith-based counseling.

Typical schedule

  • Mornings: Clients wake up between 7:00 and 7:30 a.m. and eat breakfast around 8:00 to 8:30 a.m.
  • Daytime programming: Once stable, clients attend psychoeducational groups which run until 4:00 p.m. daily. Clinical work includes evidence-based approaches like CBT, DBT, ACT, trauma-focused therapies, and EMDR. Clients can also join mindfulness, meditation, yoga, and art therapy groups.
  • Evening activities: Clients have dinner together, enjoy free time, and have opportunities to attend outside meetings like 12-step or mental health support groups, either in person or via Zoom. Clients can also visit the gym daily if desired.
  • Weekend trips: Clients can participate in outside activities ranging from outings like hikes and beach trips to mini-golf, movies, virtual reality, and museums.
  • Visitors: Visitation is assessed on a case-by-case basis and usually occurs on Saturdays or Sundays. Family pets may be allowed to accompany visitors.

“If they are really struggling to engage at any time, our doors are always open. They can come in, talk to us individually, maybe get an impromptu therapy session or case management session.” — Sean O’Neill, LMFT, Clinical Director

Living experiences and amenities

  • Comfortable accommodations: Clients stay in private or shared bedrooms and use private bathrooms with standalone soaking tubs.
  • Culinary program: A full-time chef prepares meals that can be adapted to specific nutritional needs or eating disorder accommodations.
  • Relaxation spaces: The main living area has a large sectional sofa centered around a fireplace and TV. Sliding glass doors open directly to a secure outdoor patio.

Aftercare

  • Early planning: The facility begins working on aftercare as soon as a client arrives. The goal of this early preparation is to ensure that clients have a safe landing at the next level of care when they leave.
  • Family involvement: The team prioritizes conducting family sessions and getting loved ones involved right away.
  • Step-down options: Clients have the opportunity to step down into a partial hospitalization program (PHP) or an intensive outpatient program (IOP), with housing accommodations included.
