Who is this facility a good fit for?

  • Best fit if: Adults seeking residential treatment with close medical oversight and access to hospital resources; wanting a continuum of care from hospital-based detox to residential care, PHP, and IOP; needing support for complex medical needs or ongoing health concerns.

  • Not a fit if: Adults seeking a luxury, resort-style experience with extensive amenities; needing frequent in-person contact with loved ones during residential treatment; wanting unrestricted phone or computer access; needing long-term residential care beyond 30–40 days.

What to expect

Developing your care plan

  • Intake phone assessment: The first step is an intake assessment, completed by phone. Clinicians use this information to understand each client’s background, treatment needs, and challenges to determine the appropriate level of care.
  • Counseling and medical collaboration: Counseling and medical teams collaborate to develop treatment plans, which are based on the findings of the intake assessment and clinical observations.
  • Weekly reviews: Clients have weekly therapy sessions. Treatment plans are reviewed and adjusted based on progress made and problems identified in these sessions. The clinical team also conducts weekly utilization reviews to determin whether the current level of care and treatment plan are still appropriate.

Who you will meet with

  • Psychiatrist and addiction medicine team: A psychiatrist manages medications with the support of an addiction medicine team.
  • Physicians: Residential treatment program is connected to a full-service hospital, so clients have access to various medical specialties if needed, including primary care, imaging, dentistry, and cardiology.
  • Registered nurses: Nurses provide hands-on care and help arrange referrals and outside appointments for other health concerns.
  • Therapists and addiction counselors: These clinicians lead individual, group, and family therapy sessions. Proven techniques, including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), are used.

Typical schedule

  • Structured daily routines: Clients follow regular daily routines. For example, breakfast is followed by morning meditation and group sessions, with scheduled breaks.
  • In-house experiences: In addition to therapy sessions, clients participate in art and music therapy, yoga, and take daily walks. Equine therapy occurs twice a month.
  • Meals: The addiction treatment center has its own cafe area with food, snacks, and beverages, and clients can also order meals from the Hoag cafeteria.

Living experiences and amenities

  • Family participation: Family participation begins early in treatment, with family members invited to participate in weekly family therapy. Other communication with family is somewhat limited; the facility enforces a one-week blackout period following admission. After that, clients are allowed a phone, computer, or tablet for one hour that can be used to communicate with loved ones.
  • A clinically-focused program: The residential program is hospital-based. Clients have medical access along with close connections to a wider healthcare system.
  • Experiential activities: Various in-house activities are offered, including art and music therapy, daily walks, yoga, music, and equine therapy.

Aftercare

  • Transitioning to PHP: After residential treatment, clients can transition to the PHP, which meets six hours a day, five days a week. Here, they continue group, individual, and family therapy and get medical and psychiatric oversight while living at home.
  • Intensive outpatient program: The next step is the IOP. Programming focuses on practical life skills, coping strategies, accountability, healthy routines, and community connection. Clients attend three days a week for three hours a day.
