What to expect

Developing your care plan

• Initial assessment: A trained counselor does an initial whole-person assessment that covers current and past substance use, medical history, and current mental health concerns, as well as family circumstances, living environment, and readiness to change. This assessment helps to determine whether this program is a good fit. If not, staff help clients find a more appropriate program.
• Treatment planning: After admission, clients receive individual recovery planning. Treatment plans focus on family reconnection, employment, education, and community reentry.

Who you will meet with

• Intake counselor: Reviews prospective clients’ history, needs, and readiness for treatment.
• Individual counselors: Work with clients during individual sessions and on treatment and transition planning.
• Group counseling and educational staff: Lead counseling groups, including encounter groups, family support groups, and LGBTQ+ support groups, and groups addressing family dynamics and smoking cessation. Other group work may include problem-solving exercises, relapse prevention workshops, and alcohol and drug education.
• Peer support: A client approaching the end of their time in the program helps newcomers navigate the facility, connect with peers, and understand the programs.
• Vocational and community-service support: Staff offer support with employment preparation, housing, access to health care, and other community resources.

Typical schedule

• Daily programming: Activities begin at 7 a.m. Clients attend clinical and educational activities throughout the day and prepare meals, clean, and do laundry. Supervised parent-child visitation is also available.
• Downtime: Clients have free time throughout the day to complete assignments and relax. Recreational activities are also planned to help clients experience a social life without substance use, including outings to the beach or movies or opportunities to play sports such as basketball or softball.

Living experiences and amenities

• Shared spaces: Clients share bedrooms with up to 3 other clients. Each gets their own dresser and closet space, and personal hygiene items and bedding can be provided if needed. Clients also share household responsibilities, including cleaning, laundry, and meal preparation.
• Telephone privileges: Clients are not allowed to bring personal cellphones to treatment, but after an initial 14-day orientation period, they can use a landline to contact friends and family.

Aftercare

• Practical discharge planning: Discharge planning helps address practical needs to support clients in their ongoing recovery. The facility can help with housing planning, education, and employment support. Clients can also get help figuring out how to continue treatment after residential care and find peer and community support.
