Who is this facility a good fit for?

  • Best fit if: Adult women needing 24-hour mental health treatment; seeking a program with a small peer group; needing trauma-informed treatment; seeking a program with clinical therapy and holistic care; needing support for mental health and co-occurring substance use; families who want to be involved in treatment.

  • Not a fit if: Men and adolescents; women seeking a program with a large peer community; needing withdrawal management (detox); needing support for standalone substance use without a co-occurring mental health condition; looking for a low-cost program.

What to expect

Developing your care plan

  • Planning begins before arrival: A phone assessment is the first step to determine whether residential treatment is appropriate. The organization operates various residential homes and also considers which one may be the best fit for each client, considering factors such as clinical needs and the existing group dynamics.
  • The first 7–10 days: During this period, clinicians get to know the clients and what treatment approaches work best. This may include evaluating different types of therapy or adjusting medications. The team generally gains a better understanding of what is working for the client and uses that information as a foundation for the treatment plan moving forward.
  • Various approaches: Treatment can incorporate various therapeutic approaches, such as EMDR therapy for clients with trauma and more holistic approaches, including yoga, art therapy, and sound therapy.

Who you will meet with

  • Admissions specialists: Admissions specialists complete the initial assessment and assist clients as they enter the program.
  • Case managers: These professionals help coordinate care, including organizing family visitation.
  • Psychiatrists: Psychiatrists monitor patients and manage medications for mental health needs.
  • Nurses: Nurses are part of the residential care team, offering various types of support.
  • Therapists: Clinical staff lead individual, group, and family therapy sessions.
  • Support staff: These team members are available during evenings and weekends, providing support during downtime and recreational activities.

Typical schedule

  • Morning: Clients wake up before 9 a.m., shower, and then have breakfast and free time before beginning morning groups. This is the more clinical portion of the day, with clients attending two morning sessions with a break.
  • Afternoon: After lunch, clients attend two additional groups that are geared toward holistic activities and winding down for the day. At 4 p.m., there’s a house-wide informal wrap-up group that focuses on what’s going well, what clients want to focus on, and setting personal goals.
  • Evenings: After dinner at 6 p.m., clients have free time when they can join in group activities, like movie nights, game nights, or karaoke. Lights out is at 10 p.m. They also have the option to have alone time. Each client receives a journal and can use this time for private reflection. Staff members are available if someone begins to feel overwhelmed while spending time alone.

Living experiences and amenities

  • Small residential environment: The home offers private and shared bedrooms and features bright interiors, natural light, a fireplace, and cozy sitting areas. Streaming services are available on bedroom TVs.
  • Outdoor recreation: The coastal setting provides outdoor space and backyard ocean breezes as well as access to nearby harbor trails and Doheny State Beach.
  • Wellness-focused: Clients eat chef-prepared meals using fresh ingredients. There’s also an on-site fitness area with personal trainer support, yoga, and meditation.
  • Weekend outings: Clients have a say in planning weekend activities off site. Possible outings include trips to the beach, whale watching, farmers markets, and ceramics.
  • Family contact: Family visitation is encouraged but requires the client’s approval. The client works with staff to coordinate a time that works for everyone. Family therapy is also available.

Aftercare

  • Planning for next steps: Planning typically begins before discharge, with staff helping clients evaluate next steps and needs and connecting them to resources that fit their goals.
