Who is this facility a good fit for?

  • Best fit if: Adults experiencing a significant mental health crisis; needing psychiatric evaluation and medication management; preferring stabilization in a small residential home; needing treatment for a primary mental health condition alongside co-occurring substance use; seeking a program that combines intensive psychiatric care with individual therapy, groups, holistic activities, and family involvement.

  • Not a fit if: Adults looking for withdrawal management (detox); seeking substance-use-only residential rehab without a primary mental health condition; interested in a large treatment campus or peer community.

What to expect

Developing your care plan

  • Pre-admission phone assessment: An initial phone assessment helps clinicians understand the client's medical and clinical needs to determine whether admission is appropriate. This assessment is also used to determine which of Alter’s residential locations may be the best fit based on the existing group dynamics in each home.
  • First 7–10 days: During this early period, staff get to know the client, determine which therapies may be most useful, and adjust medications as needed. This builds a foundation for ongoing treatment planning.
  • Continued reassessment: Clients receive daily psychiatric evaluations and weekly case-manager sessions, providing opportunities for reassessment and changes to treatment plans.

Who you will meet with

  • Psychiatrists: Psychiatrists meet with clients for daily psychiatric evaluations and manage medication.
  • Nurses: Psychiatric nursing staff provide 24/7 support. During the stabilization period, they may check in with clients every 30–60 minutes.
  • Therapists: Clients meet with a primary therapist for individual sessions twice a week. Therapists also lead group therapy and education sessions.
  • Case managers: Case managers meet with clients weekly and coordinate care and family visitation.
  • Admissions specialists: Admissions specialists conduct the initial assessment and help coordinate admission to the appropriate location.
  • Support staff: Residential staff offer support 24/7, including during evening downtime and overnight.

Typical schedule

  • Morning: Clients wake up early. After showering and eating breakfast, they have downtime until morning groups start around 9 a.m. These typically include two therapeutic or clinical groups with a break in between.
  • Afternoon: After lunch, clients attend two more groups that are more holistic in nature with the goal of helping clients wind down. There is a house-wide wrap-up meeting every day at 4 p.m. when clients focus on what’s going well, what needs work, and individual goals.
  • Evening: Dinner is served around 6 p.m. It's followed by less structured time when clients can participate in activities like movie nights, games, art activities, and karaoke. Clients can also opt out and spend time privately. Staff are available to offer support, and lights out is at 10 p.m.
  • Weekend outings: Clients help choose weekend excursions. These may include beach trips, movies, ceramics, and bike rides.

Living experiences and amenities

  • Residential home setting: The residence is a peaceful, home-like environment with mountain views, two private rooms and two shared rooms, a spacious backyard, and a swimming pool.
  • Wellness and holistic programming: Holistic programming includes yoga, mindfulness, and sound baths. Clients can also focus on physical fitness. A personal trainer visits the home twice a week, and meals are prepared by an on-site private chef.
  • Off-site weekend excursions: Clients and their peers have input into weekend activities, which can include beach trips, movies, and bike rides at Newport Pier.
  • Family contact: Family contact is prioritized within 72 hours of admission, ideally within 24 hours. Clients’ families receive updates and education about the client's diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment plan. Visitation is encouraged. Rather than being limited to a specific visitation window, times are coordinated between the client, case manager, and family member. Clients must also give advance approval for all visits.

Aftercare

  • After stabilization: After crisis stabilization, clients typically transition into another program, such as a residential mental health treatment facility or mental health-focused partial hospitalization program (PHP).
  • Maintaining progress: Before clients leave treatment, the care team helps them find a therapist, books initial follow-up appointments, and connects them with appropriate support groups or other meetings.
