What to expect
Developing your care plan
- Initial assessment: Prior to admission, clients can call a 24/7 admission helpline where they will undergo a free and confidential clinical assessment that covers substance use history, medical history, co-occurring mental health, and treatment needs. Insurance verification is completed before admission as well. Immediate availability may be possible.
- Admission and treatment planning: Once admitted, clients undergo an intake assessment and meet with the clinical team to create their personalized care plan based on the outcomes of the assessment. They are also provided an orientation of the facility before beginning detox.
Who you will meet with
- Medical and psychiatric team: Clients meet with a psychiatrist within 24 hours of admission and are also supported by physicians and nursing staff who oversee detox when needed, manage medications, and provide medical care.
- Therapists: A primary therapist provides weekly individual counseling and guides the client’s personalized care plan. Group therapists lead daily group and psychoeducational sessions.
- Case management and supportive services: An assigned case manager helps coordinate treatment, the client’s recovery needs, and discharge planning. Additionally, a dietitian is on staff to support whole-person recovery.
Typical schedule
- Daily clinical programming: Most of each day is typically spent taking part in small-group therapy. The focus for these sessions can include recovery education, skill building, relapse prevention, and peer support. Clients will also work with their case managers during this time, planning for their aftercare and practical recovery needs. Medication management also takes place throughout the week.
- Holistic wellness activities: In addition to therapy, clients have access to wellness activities that include yoga twice per week, a sound bath healing session, and one art therapy session.
- Community outings and recreation: A number of supervised outings take place throughout the San Diego area during treatment. These may include neighborhood walks in Mission Hills two to three times per week, weekend visits to La Jolla, Seaport Village, and the Embarcadero, weekly evening bonfire meetings, and nature hikes at Mission Trails Regional Park, Torrey Pines, and Murray Lake.
Living experiences and amenities
- Residential setting: Clients can expect shared living arrangements with two residents per room, sharing a bathroom. The facility can support 32 residents at a time. On-site laundry facilities are also available.
- Family communication: Contact is limited during the early stages of treatment to help clients focus on recovery. In-person visitation is not allowed during a client's stay. A five-day phone blackout period is in place but beginning on day six, phone access becomes available from 8:30 to 10:30 p.m. each evening.
Aftercare
- Continuum of care: The facility provides access to outpatient programming and virtual treatment after formal residential treatment is complete. Clients enter through a single intake process and may move between levels of care based on their individual recovery progress.
- Extended care and alumni program: The facility offers an extended care program intended on providing continued support once a client has completed formal treatment. This is called the AKUA Alumni Program and can include weekly alumni meetings, mentorship, and continued connection to coordinators through phone calls, texts, and in-person support. This can include events such as BBQs, bowling, and hiking. An alumni app is also available for clients to stay connected and access information for alumni programming.
- Specialized alumni support groups: The alumni program offers specialty support groups that may include LGBTQ+ support meetings, an Indigenous Talking Circle, recovery volleyball, college student support groups, family support groups, veteran and first responder support groups, mental health support groups, volunteer and networking opportunities.
