Who is this facility a good fit for?
Best fit if: People who want a small-group environment; need 24/7 residential treatment and withdrawal management (detox); prefer upscale accommodations and holistic therapies; want to choose the type of recovery meetings they attend; have private insurance or can self pay.
Not a fit if: Those looking for outpatient-only care; prefer a self-directed recovery approach; not willing to stay in a structured residential environment; have Medicaid, or are uninsured and unable to self pay.
What to expect
Developing your care plan
- Starting assessment: Over the phone, clients and staff members discuss substance use history and co-occurring mental health needs. For those who need substance use withdrawal management but mainly require mental health treatment, staff can transfer them to their mental-health-only facility once they are stable.
- Collaboration: Clients have a say in how their treatment goes. They join forces with clinicians and case managers to create a plan that works for their needs and goals. Family members can also have input when appropriate.
- Advanced testing: Brain mapping is a method that can be used to observe clients’ specific neurological patterns. Genetic testing is also offered; this can help psychiatrists hone in on the mental health medications most likely to work with people’s biochemistry.
Who you will meet with
- Licensed therapists: Lead one-on-one and group sessions. Individual therapy sessions take place twice per week, or more if needed. Licensed marriage and family therapists (LMFTs) are on staff to help couples and loved ones together.
- Psychiatric nurse practitioners: Support mental health and medication management.
- Doctors and clinical staff: Oversee withdrawal management and attend to clients’ overall wellness.
- Case managers and social workers: Help with practical needs, including aftercare.
Typical schedule
- Morning groups: From 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 p.m., therapy is in session. This can be a mix of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), trauma-focused care, and motivational interviewing (MI).
- Afternoons: Holistic and experiential activities are scheduled between 1:00 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. Meditation, yoga, sound baths, and nutrition are a few offerings. Clients can also participate in equine therapy with horses and go to the gym.
- Evening recovery meetings: After dinner, staff take clients to off-site meetings. People can choose between 12-step groups, or go to SMART recovery meetings for a secular approach.
- Weekends: Saturdays and Sundays are less structured than weekdays. Group outings are held, such as beach and museum visits. Family visitation also usually happens on weekends, though family members from out of town can arrange to visit on other days as well.
Living experiences and amenities
- Upscale mansion: The facility is a spacious mansion set on a cliff overlooking the ocean. Private, double, and triple rooms are available, depending on what space is available.
- Shared indoor spaces: Clients can relax in comfortable living rooms, and sit on balconies to enjoy sunrise and sunset views.
- Meals: Private chefs prepare meals for clients. This way, people don’t have to worry about cooking while focusing on their recovery.
Aftercare
- Step-down arrangements: After residential treatment is complete, staff can help clients transition to outpatient care without interruption. Partial hospitalization (PHP), intensive outpatient (IOP), or regular outpatient programs can be set up depending on individual needs.
- Case management: Case managers and social workers can assist with housing arrangements, employment paperwork, and navigating social services.
