Family-Centered Residential Care for Mothers

The Women and Children Center for Inner Healing is a medium-intensity, long-term residential program set in a quiet Fairbanks neighborhood. It serves pregnant and postpartum women whose children, up to age 7, can live with them in the same home-like setting. This family-focused model lets mothers work on recovery without having to separate from their children, easing a major barrier to entering and staying in treatment.

Evidence-Based Treatment for Substance Use and Mental Health

Clients receive comprehensive assessments for substance use and mental health before starting care. The program uses evidence-based approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), motivational interviewing, the Matrix Model, relapse prevention, and substance use counseling. Trauma-related counseling and anger management address the emotional impact of substance use and related life experiences. The center also accepts clients who are using medications for addiction treatment (MAT), even when those medications are prescribed elsewhere.

Building Parenting, Life Skills, and Economic Stability

Counseling is paired with practical support so mothers can build a more stable life after treatment. Clients participate in life skills workshops, parenting support, and employment counseling or job training. These services help women strengthen daily routines, improve communication, and prepare for work or education. Child care for clients’ children and housing services can make it more realistic for women to stay engaged in care.

Support for Safety, Health, and Community Connection

The program serves adult women, including veterans, members of military families, and women who have experienced sexual abuse, intimate partner violence, or other forms of trauma. Services include domestic violence support, suicide prevention, early intervention for HIV, and education on HIV, hepatitis, and overall health. Clients can take part in self-help groups and social skills development, helping them rebuild a support network. Transportation assistance makes it easier to attend appointments and access needed services in the community.

Rooted in Native Community, Open to All

Operated by the Fairbanks Native Association, a private nonprofit, the center reflects a mission to improve quality of life by promoting justice, healing, and wellness in a unified, empowered Native community that embraces all cultures. As part of a broader network of adult services focused on issues like suicide prevention and the opioid crisis, the program offers a culturally grounded, community-based setting for women seeking a safe, family-oriented place to begin recovery.
