Forested Campus with Outdoor Activities
White Deer Run Allenwood sits on a large, 150-acre campus in the Bald Eagle State Forest of central Pennsylvania. The facility is surrounded by walking trails and has plenty of outdoor gathering spaces where peers can spend time together and connect. This includes a gazebo by a pond. Experiential group therapies, such as a team-building ropes course, are woven into treatment. Clients can also practice yoga and tai chi outside for stress relief and self-reflection.
Gender-Specific Housing and Groups
While the campus is co-ed, men and women stay in separate residences. Some groups are mixed gender, and others are gender-specific. This can benefit clients who are more comfortable sharing with peers in a gender-specific environment, especially when discussing sensitive topics such as trauma.
Christian Recovery Option
A Christian faith-based recovery track is offered alongside regular 12-step and evidence-based programming. This program involves Bible study and spiritual guidance, and may include sermons in an outdoor, forested chapel area. This program is entirely optional, so clients can shape their recovery in a way that fits their beliefs and values.
12-Step Work, Therapy, and Mental Health Care
Twelve-step work is foundational to White Deer Run’s treatment approach. Clients regularly attend recovery meetings including Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and Narcotics Anonymous (NA) and receive education on 12-step principles. In both individual and group sessions, therapists and counselors use evidence-based therapies including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), motivational interviewing, and relapse prevention. Holistic therapies include art therapy, meditation, fitness, and reiki. Psychiatric care is provided for clients with co-occurring mental health conditions.
Step-Down and Aftercare
Clients can transition from withdrawal management (detox) to residential treatment at the same location. This allows care to continue smoothly and without disruptions. Once clients are ready, they can be connected to outpatient programs at nearby White Deer Run facilities. From the start of treatment, staff collaborate with clients to create individualized discharge plans. Depending on each client’s specific situation, these can include setting up stable housing, help with navigating social services, and referrals to outside counseling and mental health services.
