Trauma-Informed Substance Use and Mental Health Care for Women

Both the withdrawal management (detox) and residential treatment levels only accept women, with gender-specific groups designed to address women' s unique experiences. This includes specialized care for women who have experienced trauma, including domestic violence, as well as those with co-occurring mental health conditions. Medications for addiction treatment (MAT) and psychiatric medications can be prescribed when appropriate, but are not mandatory. The program accepts women from all walks of life, including those who are pregnant or postpartum, or have been involved in the criminal justice system.

12-Step Foundation and Evidence-Based Therapies

White Deer Run centers its philosophy around the Twelve Steps. Women participate in peer recovery meetings including Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and Narcotics Anonymous (NA), as well as education on 12-step principles. This is combined with evidence-based therapies including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), motivational enhancement therapy (MET), and relapse prevention. These approaches are used throughout daily groups and individual therapy sessions.

Optional Christian Recovery Pathway

For women who want to incorporate their faith into their recovery process, White Deer Run offers a Christian-centered program which runs alongside regular 12-step and evidence-based therapies. The Christian program involves Bible study, spiritual lectures, and faith-based education sessions. This recovery track is optional, so women can choose what fits their values and beliefs.

Step-Down Transitions and Aftercare

Since withdrawal management and residential treatment are held at the same location, women can move between both smoothly and without disruption. Women who are ready for outpatient care can attend partial hospitalization (PHP) and intensive outpatient programs (IOP) at nearby White Deer Run locations. Before treatment ends, staff can help women secure stable housing, navigate social services, and get connected to outside counseling and mental health care.
