Overview
Hospital-based, veteran-focused treatment addresses addiction and mental health concerns within a Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) medical center. Care addresses substance use alongside PTSD, depression, anxiety, military sexual trauma, and physical health needs. Clients may be able to receive withdrawal management (detox), residential and outpatient care, and medications for addiction treatment (MAT). Trauma-related counseling may be available, as well as individual, group, family, and couples therapy. Residential programs can also support housing stability, education, employment, and resources to help clients reintegrate with the community.

Residential care and practical support
Residential care takes place in a 24-hour monitored therapeutic and educational setting for clients experiencing substance use or mental health concerns, homelessness, or unemployment. Support may also be available through housing services, case management, peer mentoring, social skills development, employment counseling or training, and vocational or educational assistance. During addiction treatment, clients may also have access to primary care, psychiatry, PTSD services, women’s health, pharmacy services, and suicide prevention.
Treatment and medication options
Care may be available in hospital, residential, and outpatient settings, including withdrawal management. Medications for addiction treatment (MAT) may include buprenorphine and naltrexone for opioid use and acamprosate, disulfiram, and naltrexone for alcohol use. Clients receiving counseling may take part in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), motivational interviewing, contingency management, trauma-related counseling, relapse prevention, the Matrix model, and 12-Step facilitation.
Counseling and continued support
Clients may take part in individual, group, family, and couples therapies to help them address substance use, trauma, and relationship concerns. Discharge planning takes place during treatment and can connect clients with ongoing support, aftercare, various self-help groups, naloxone, and overdose education. Follow-up services may help monitor progress after the client has completed formal treatment. Telehealth may provide continued access to mental health and other VA services from the comfort of home.
Transportation and VA eligibility
Eligible clients traveling for VA-approved treatment may qualify for mileage reimbursement or receive help making transportation arrangements. A 24/7 emergency department and around-the-clock nurse advice line may provide access to support outside regular appointment hours. Care is for veterans, and eligibility may need to be confirmed prior to treatment.
