Who is this facility a good fit for?

  • Best fit if: Men looking for 24/7 residential care with on-site detox; prefer a small-town setting; want an abstinence-based recovery approach with 12-step and peer support; interested in step-down partial hospitalization (PHP) at the same location; have private insurance, Medicaid, TRICARE, or can self-pay.

  • Not a fit if: Those who need acute, hospital-level care; want a city-based or luxury treatment environment; prefer a non-12-step approach; looking for outpatient-only or self-directed recovery; are uninsured and unable to self-pay.

What to expect

Developing your care plan

  • Customized recovery pathways: Treatment plans are adapted to each client, taking into account their substance use and mental health history. Clients can be placed in dedicated therapy groups on topics such as trauma and grief, depending on their needs.
  • Monitoring and adjustments: Primary therapists and the rest of the multidisciplinary care team monitor clients as they move through the program. Care plans can be adjusted as needed based on progress and challenges.

Who you will meet with

  • Therapists and counselors: Individual counseling takes place at least three times per week. Therapists and counselors also lead daily group sessions.
  • Nurses: Attend to clients’ health and provide medical care. This includes 24/7 monitoring during withdrawal management (detox).
  • Psychiatrists: Work with men who have co-occurring mental health conditions or concerns.

Typical schedule

  • Mornings: Once men wake up and have breakfast, there is time for morning devotions before therapy groups start for the day.
  • Structured daily programming: Days in residential treatment follow a pattern of groups, individual therapy on designated days, and recreational and creative therapies. All meals and snacks are provided, and clients have scheduled breaks and phone time to call loved ones.
  • Evenings: Men attend peer recovery support meetings such as Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), Narcotics Anonymous (NA), and Celebrate Recovery. Lights-out is around 10:30-11 p.m.
  • Therapeutic approaches: Include cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), motivational interviewing (MI), relapse prevention, experiential and recreational therapies, and art and music therapy.

Living experiences and amenities

  • Large, small-town campus: Life Center of Hillsville is set on a 100-acre property in the Blue Ridge Mountains of southwestern Virginia. The center can accommodate up to 103 men.
  • Shared accommodations: Men stay in air-conditioned bedrooms that are shared with one or two roommates.
  • Recreation: The campus has a one-mile forested walking trail and a full baseball field, along with outdoor space for activities like cornhole and pickleball. There is also an indoor gym with a full basketball court.

Aftercare

  • Step-down PHP: Men who complete residential treatment can choose to step down to PHP at the same facility. This program runs daily, with clients returning home or to sober living accommodations in the evenings.
  • Discharge planning and peer support: Staff help men develop detailed aftercare plans before they graduate. This can include referrals to local 12-step meetings so men can stay connected to a supportive peer community.
