Life Center of Galax
Overview
Residential and outpatient substance use and mental health care with on-site detox and an optional Christian recovery track. Specialized treatment is also provided for couples, veterans, and court-appointed clients. The program centers around a 12-step foundation. Therapists use evidence-based cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and offer groups focused on healing from grief and trauma. Clients engage in one-on-one therapy at least three times per week. Along with medications for addiction treatment (MAT), Life Center of Galax offers optional acudetox, a holistic ear acupuncture technique designed to help ease withdrawal symptoms. This facility accepts private insurance, Medicaid, TRICARE, and self-pay.

Who is this facility a good fit for?
Best fit if: Adults looking for 24/7 residential and step-down outpatient care; need on-site withdrawal management (detox); want to participate in an optional Christian recovery track; couples who want treatment together; veterans; court-appointed clients; willing to participate in 12-step work with individual and group therapy; have private insurance, Medicaid, TRICARE, or can self-pay.
Not a fit if: Those who need acute, hospital-level care; looking for treatment in a larger city; prefer a non-12-step approach; unwilling to participate in structured group and individual therapy; have Medicare, or are uninsured and unable to self-pay.
What to expect
Developing your care plan
- Assessments: Treatment is adapted to clients’ unique needs and challenges. Upon arrival, clients take an assessment so staff can better understand their substance use and medical history, mental health concerns, and the specifics of their daily lives.
- Customized treatment: After going over assessment results, staff work with clients to customize a plan that will work for them, taking into account their circumstances and individual recovery goals. Those who need specialized groups for issues like trauma and grief can find them here.
Who you will meet with
- Therapists and counselors: Primary therapists work one-on-one with clients at least three times per week. Therapists and counselors also lead frequent daily group sessions.
- Doctors and nurses: Attend to medical needs, including withdrawal management and writing prescriptions when needed.
- Psychiatrists: Work with clients who have co-occurring mental health concerns.
Typical schedule
- Detox: The medical team monitors clients 24/7 to make sure they are withdrawing safely and as comfortably as possible. Medications for addiction treatment (MAT) can be prescribed to help ease symptoms and cravings. Acudetox, a noninvasive ear acupuncture method, is offered as a holistic option to help ease the process of withdrawal.
- Mornings: The day starts at 7:00 a.m. with self-care routines and a healthy breakfast. Afterward, clients can engage in optional morning devotions. They then check in with medical staff before groups begin.
- Daily programming: Clients attend multiple group therapy sessions, educational lectures, and recovery-centered activities, with breaks in between for relaxation, lunch, and snacks. Individual therapy takes place three times per week.
- Evenings: A family-style dinner is served at 5:00 p.m. After that, clients can participate in a group building exercise. Evenings consist of on-site Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and Narcotics Anonymous (NA) meetings, with deep peer engagement.
- Optional faith-based recovery track: Within the Christian-centered Prodigal Program, clients take part in faith-centered groups, Bible study, and daily devotional services. They also have opportunities for prayer. The center has dedicated chapel rooms — one for men and one for women — where many of these services are held.
Living experiences and amenities
- Small-town campus: The campus is set among the Blue Ridge Mountains in the small town of Galax, Virginia. This setting can lend to more peace and quiet while clients recover.
- Gender-specific accommodations: Many rooms in the facility are gender-separate, with bedrooms, nursing areas, activity rooms, and many common spaces dedicated to either men or women. Bedrooms are shared with one or two other peers.
- Downtime: Outside of therapy hours, clients have time for self-reflection and socializing. They can also exercise in the on-site gym, make art, and use the facility phone to call loved ones.
Aftercare
- Step-down continuum: After completing the residential phase, clients can step down to partial hospitalization (PHP), intensive outpatient (IOP), and regular outpatient sessions. Having all these programs within one location helps ensure continuity of care.
- Continuing care: Before clients leave treatment, staff can connect them to local 12-step meetings and other peer recovery groups. They can also provide housing assistance, referrals to sober living, and help navigating social services.
