  • Best fit if: Adult men who are seeking residential support for substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health conditions; interested in harm reduction; value peer support; who can benefit from medications for addiction treatment (MAT); gay, bisexual, and transgender men who are looking for residential treatment.
  • Not a fit if: Women; men who prefer a quiet, relaxed environment; have anxiety and may struggle in a busy communal environment; prefer a smaller treatment community; want a private bedroom; need access to personal electronics; families who want in-person visitation.

What to expect

Developing your care plan

  • Initial steps: Walk-ins for the program are accepted from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday, at the organization's Integrated Care Center (located at 1563 Mission Street). Clients are encouraged to arrive early. The intake process takes about 2 to 3 hours.
  • A collaborative approach: Clients work with their counselors to develop treatment plans. Withdrawal management (detox) is offered at the Integrated Care Center for clients who need it before beginning residential treatment.
  • Acceptance Place: This location also offers the Acceptance Place program, a dedicated residential program for men who identify as gay, bisexual, or transgender.

Who you will meet with

  • Counselors: Counselors work with clients to create treatment plans and also lead individual and group therapy sessions.
  • Medical team: A medical doctor and nursing staff provide ongoing medical support during treatment.

Typical schedule

  • Daily schedules: Clients have counseling sessions and group activities throughout the day and into the evening. Programming is held 7 days a week and also includes mental health services, harm reduction, and peer support.

Living experiences and amenities

  • Communal living and communication: Clients share bedrooms, and while cell phones are permitted, other electronic devices are not.
  • Visitation: Visitors are not permitted in the residential program. However, clients can receive passes to leave the facility for a few hours at a time as they advance through the program.

Aftercare

  • Step-down programming: Clients can step down into other programs in the broader HealthRIGHT 360 organization, offering a potential bridge between residential treatment and continued care. However, access to these programs is contingent on clients having Medi-Cal.

Pre-admissions experience

We conducted a series of pre-admissions calls, the most recent on October 27, 2026, to evaluate response time, transparency, and patient experience.

We spoke with a representative at HealthRIGHT 360 who was direct, responsive, and provided clear information about how the facility operates. The representative gave detailed information about the intake process, staffing, and visitation policy. They were transparent about payment options, explaining that the facility only accepts Medi-Cal.

Client reviews

Client feedback reflects both positive recovery experiences and concerns about staff interactions, program practices, and client safety. Many former clients credit Walden House with providing structure, meaningful relationships, and support for long-term recovery, while others describe difficulties with staff responsiveness, discharge procedures, and facility conditions.

  • Treatment quality & outcomes (90% positive): Many former clients describe the program as an important part of their recovery, highlighting its structured approach, educational groups, and opportunities to develop skills that supported lasting change. Some reviewers also raise concerns about the quality and consistency of clinical support. "Walden House 890 Hayes st. Changed my life."
  • Staff & care experience (65% positive): Feedback about staff is mixed. Some former clients describe staff and mentors as compassionate, experienced, and helpful, while others report unprofessional behavior, perceived bullying, and concerns about privacy and respectful treatment. "The staff is awesome, the program allows you to grow the way you want to."
  • Support & community (100% positive): Former clients highlight meaningful relationships with peers, mentors, and program staff. Some describe a strong sense of belonging and credit these connections with helping them rebuild relationships and maintain recovery. "I had the chance to meet some of the greatest mentors a person can meet."
  • Facility & environment: Feedback about the physical environment is mixed. While some reviewers describe the facilities positively, others raise concerns about cleanliness, food quality, and maintenance, including reports of pest problems.
  • Access & process: Some reviewers describe challenges with admissions and discharge procedures, including difficulty accessing treatment and concerns about being discharged without adequate transition support. These experiences point to opportunities to improve communication and continuity of care.

Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities

For addiction treatment, CARF uses standards developed with the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM), so this accreditation shows the program follows trusted, evidence-based guidelines for treating substance use.

How we research treatment facilities

Across the site, our team has conducted over 1,000 pre-admissions calls to better understand the patient experience, interviewed facility clinical leaders, performed facility background checks, and compared our information against trusted public data sources.

Our research process begins with data from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), accrediting bodies including The Joint Commission and CARF, government licensing agencies, and other trusted sources. From there, our team conducts significant original research, including:

- Pre-admissions calls: We speak with admissions staff to get a candid picture of patient experience.

- Background checks: We review complaints from past clients, media reports, actions taken by accrediting bodies, and positive recognition from notable organizations.

- Clinical interviews: We have in-depth conversations with clinical leadership, often lasting up to one hour, that give us a better understanding of clinical care.

- Data partnerships: We ingest and analyze exclusive data that provides information about in-network insurance status, cost, and more.

Research varies by facility. Each facility profile shows which research steps we completed and when each step was last performed. Learn more about our research process and background checks.

How we evaluate treatment facilities

These data help us develop a Trust Score for each facility—a simple letter grade that helps you assess how much confidence to place in a facility based on the information available to us. Trust Score considers accreditation, operating history, notable recognition, and concerns identified during our background check. Our Trust Score is an objective rating that is never influenced by advertiser payment. Learn more about our Trust Score methodology.
