A continuum of care that starts with detox and steps down as clients stabilize

Blue Heron Recovery provides detox, a PHP, an IOP, and standard outpatient treatment. Clients can move through different levels of care as their needs change, transitioning into structured daytime treatment while living at home, working, or going to school. The evening IOP has sessions available Monday–Thursday, 6–9 p.m., which can be helpful to clients who plan to attend treatment while continuing to work or attend classes.

A nature-oriented setting

The facility is located on 18 acres of densely wooded grounds along Salado Creek in San Antonio. It offers indoor and outdoor gathering spaces and recreational areas as well as gardens and walking trails. Clients also have opportunities to participate in hands-on activities, like gardening, fishing, cooking, and biking. These activities not only help clients build wellness routines and coping skills but also offer pathways into new hobbies and interests.

Evidence-based treatments and practical skill-building

Treatment includes individual and group counseling with proven approaches, like cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), as well as art therapy and music therapy. Programming also centers on helping clients work on triggers and cravings and improve emotional regulation and relationships. Practical skills, like stress management and social skills development, are also emphasized to help clients develop the tools they need to maintain long-term recovery.

Social connections and ongoing support

Community is a significant part of the approach to treatment. Family meetings, recovery meetings, community events, and alumni meetings and events are all integrated into treatment. Relapse prevention and life skills programming also prepare clients to step down to lower levels of care or to return to daily life after leaving treatment.
