Structured Residential Care for Men
Turning Point is Lake Area Recovery Center’s residential program for adult men in Ashtabula, Ohio. Clients from across the state live on site for roughly 30–90 days in a 24/7, substance-free environment centered on recovery. A highly structured schedule, including 4–5 group sessions most days for about 38 hours each week, gives clients time and space to step out of crisis, build new routines, and focus on substance-free living without trying to manage everything alone.
Evidence-Based Therapies and Medication Support
Clinical care centers on evidence-based approaches for substance use disorders. Clients participate in individual counseling, substance use groups, anger management, cognitive behavioral work, motivational interviewing, relapse prevention, and 12-step facilitation. When appropriate, the team can incorporate medications for addiction treatment (MAT) to help reduce cravings and support stability, and can coordinate with outside prescribers so clients who arrive on medication can maintain continuity of care.
Support for Co-Occurring Needs and Trauma
Many clients arrive with a mix of substance use, emotional distress, and other health concerns. Turning Point is designed to address these together rather than in separate tracks. Trauma-focused counseling and services for clients who have experienced sexual abuse, intimate partner violence, or other trauma are available, along with suicide prevention support and overdose education, including how to respond to an opioid-related emergency.
Practical Help With Work, Housing, and Family Roles
Beyond therapy, the center places strong emphasis on practical supports that make recovery more sustainable after discharge. Clients can access case management, vocational training or educational support, employment counseling, and help connecting with housing services and community social services. Life skills and social skills groups help men practice communication, problem-solving, and daily responsibilities. Family counseling and parenting education support healthier relationships at home.
Accessible, Community-Rooted Treatment
Turning Point is operated by Lake Area Recovery Center, a nonprofit organization that has provided services in Ashtabula County for many years. The program offers payment assistance and a sliding fee scale so that cost is less likely to prevent someone from entering care. The center offers transportation assistance to help clients get to and from treatment. Specialized programming is available for veterans, active duty military members and their families, and men involved in the criminal justice system.
