Exclusive Program for Firefighters and Paramedics

The center is dedicated to serving active and retired members of the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF). This environment creates a deep sense of trust and cultural understanding among firefighters and paramedics who understand each other’s challenges firsthand, which can be highly beneficial when treating trauma and substance use. From group therapy to daily routines, the program is designed around the unique stressors, traumas, and bonding experiences of these professionals.

Firehouse-Inspired Residential Care in a Soothing Environment

Set on a private, wooded campus, the center provides a tranquil backdrop for recovery. Walking trails, outdoor lounges, and garden areas offer opportunities for reflection and reconnection with nature. The facility’s firehouse-style communal spaces, set across seven buildings, create comfort and familiarity. Clients stay in private rooms with comfortable amenities and have access to a full fitness center, a swimming pool, and plenty of outdoor recreation including sports areas and a fire pit for social gatherings.

Focused One-on-One Therapy

As part of the residential program, clients are assigned a primary therapist within the first two days of treatment and go on to participate in two individual therapy sessions each week. This one-on-one time allows for opportunities to build trust and dig deep into the specifics of clients’ individual needs. Medical appointments are also frequent, occurring daily in detox and twice each week during residential care. As part of aftercare plans, clients can be connected with individual counselors or psychiatrists as appropriate.

Trauma-Informed Mental Health Treatment

The center specializes in treating the complex connections between substance use, mental health, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). It offers evidence-based therapies including eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), individual and group therapy, and family counseling. Care staff adapt treatment intensity to the severity of trauma, with many clients staying 30 to 60 days depending on their needs. Those struggling with serious mental illness also receive medication management and psychiatric care.

What Patients Say

The IAFF Center of Excellence is described as life-changing by many former residents. Patients often highlight the life-saving impact of EMDR therapy, the strength of community built among firefighter peers, and the attentive, respectful care of staff. Some mention emotional challenges post-discharge, especially after forming deep bonds during treatment, but overall, feedback indicates a strong sense of healing, hope, and readiness to move forward.
