A Residential Alternative During Acute Mental Health Crisis

Pathways Inc – Crisis Stabilization Unit provides short-term, 24-hour residential care for people facing acute mental health crises, including those with co-occurring substance use concerns. The program offers a structured, non-hospital setting designed to help individuals stabilize safely while receiving focused clinical and peer-based support during a critical period.

Built for Transitions in Care

This unit is well suited for people stepping up from outpatient services, stepping down from inpatient hospitalization, or entering structured care for the first time during a mental health emergency. Its role within the broader Pathways, Inc. network allows care teams to focus on stabilization while coordinating appropriate next steps for continued treatment.

Daily Therapy in a Small, Supportive Setting

Individuals receive one to three hours of therapy each day, with services shaped around immediate needs. Treatment approaches may include substance use counseling, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), motivational interviewing, trauma-related counseling, anger management, and relapse prevention. Daily peer support services help reduce isolation and provide connection during stabilization.

Medication Management and Coordinated Medical Support

Medication management is integrated into care, including medications for mental health conditions and medications for addiction treatment when appropriate. The unit coordinates with in-network prescribing providers and includes primary care consultations to address physical health needs alongside behavioral health. Medically supervised withdrawal (detox) may be provided after stabilization when clinically indicated.

Planning for Stability Beyond Crisis Care

Discharge planning begins early, with a focus on continuity of care after stabilization. Support may include aftercare coordination, overdose education, follow-up after discharge, peer mentoring, case management, housing assistance, help accessing social services, and employment counseling or training. Transportation assistance may be available to help reduce barriers to ongoing care.
