Who is this facility a good fit for?

  • Best fit if: Young adults with a primary mental health condition who need residential or outpatient care; have a co-occurring substance use disorder, trauma, or eating disorder; looking for a blend of clinical and experiential therapies; want the option for strong family involvement; prefer a home-like treatment setting; using private insurance or self-pay.

  • Not a fit if: Those who need acute, hospital-level medical or psychiatric treatment; clients who have an impaired decision-making capability; have a primary substance use disorder without a significant mental health component; require detox; want a self-directed recovery approach; using Medicaid or are uninsured and unable to self-pay.

What to expect

Developing your care plan

  • Detailed evaluations: Before the program begins, clinicians give clients in-depth medical and psychiatric background assessments. Clients are closely involved in shaping care plans by providing their goals, preferences, and the history of what therapies may have worked well — or not so well — in the past.
  • Adapted recovery pathways: Treatment is tailored to each client’s unique needs and mental health diagnosis. These include depression, anxiety, mood disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Clients can also receive care for co-occurring substance use and eating disorders.
  • Weekly reassessment: Every week, the multidisciplinary treatment team sits down to assess and re-evaluate care plans. These can be updated based on progress, setbacks, and client feedback as the program unfolds. Program length is flexible and determined on a case-by-case basis.
  • First 72 hours: Clients are given time to settle in and acclimate before they start the full clinical schedule. The pace is intentionally gentle on the first day. New clients can take a tour of the house, meet the care team, and get acquainted with their peers.

“Our goal is to establish a sense of safety, comfort, and familiarity as quickly as possible, creating the foundation for clients to engage and benefit from treatment.” — Michael Roeske, PsyD, senior director of Newport Healthcare's Center for Research and Innovation

Who you will meet with

  • Therapists: A primary therapist serves as clients’ main point of contact and guidance during treatment. They lead clients in weekly individual therapy sessions. Associate therapists lead group sessions throughout the day.
  • Psychiatrists: A psychiatrist works with clients one-on-one every week, manages mental health medications, and makes sure clients are progressing on the right track with their treatment.
  • Nurses: Registered nurses (RNs) are available 24/7 to watch over clients and tend to their medical needs.
  • Dieticians: Registered dieticians provide wellness support and plan nutritious meals.

Typical schedule

  • Personalized clinical agenda: Schedules are highly variable and depend on clients’ individual treatment plans. Days include group therapy, community peer activities, weekly individual therapy, and weekly psychiatric sessions.
  • Family integration: Family therapy is available depending on young adults’ preferences and circumstances. For those who choose family integration, loved ones can be involved from the start of treatment. Clinicians lead families in attachment-based family therapy (ABFT), an approach designed to help mend parent-child relationships.
  • Evidence-based therapies: Therapy sessions involve a combination of proven approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and trauma-informed eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR).
  • Creativity and wellness: Alongside clinical work, clients may participate in art, music, photography, meditation, yoga, and breathwork to find what resonates with them.
  • Adventure therapy: Care staff take clients on beach visits, where they have opportunities to engage in surf therapy, paddleboarding, or kayaking. Other excursions include hiking and rock climbing.
  • Education and life skills: Building life skills to prepare clients for independent living after treatment is a key part of the program. This includes nutrition education, as physical and mental wellness are closely connected.

“Throughout the course of treatment, we continually measure outcomes and use that data to further refine and personalize care.” — Michael Roeske, PsyD, senior director of Newport Healthcare's Center for Research and Innovation

Living experiences and amenities

  • Gender-specific accommodations: Men and women stay in separate homes, and clients can choose the residence that aligns with their gender identity. The houses are upscale and spacious with quiet residential surroundings.
  • Comfortable shared spaces: Bedrooms are usually shared with one other roommate. Clients can also gather in shared living spaces with modern furnishings, as well as shaded outdoor areas.

Aftercare

  • Step-down options: Clients who complete the residential program can transition to daily partial hospitalization program (PHP), intensive outpatient programs (IOP), or regular outpatient sessions. Some clients may start care at an outpatient center if they don’t require 24/7 live-in treatment.
  • Early discharge planning: A dedicated discharge planner starts working with clients early in treatment to help them prepare for what comes next. This can include coordinating outpatient care or getting clients and families the resources they need for when clients return home.
  • Alumni support: An alumni coordinator is on-staff to make sure clients can stay connected after the program ends. Alumni resources include themed groups, regional alumni contacts, peer reunions, and online support groups for young adults and their family members.

“Discharge and aftercare planning start early, helping ensure seamless transitions and continuity of care after treatment.” — Michael Roeske, PsyD, senior director of Newport Healthcare's Center for Research and Innovation

Medical leadership interview

Interview conducted with Michael Roeske, PsyD, senior director of Newport Healthcare's Center for Research and Innovation, on July 20, 2026 by Start Your Recovery Director of Content, Molly McSweyn.

We interviewed Michael Roeske, PsyD, senior director of Newport Healthcare's Center for Research and Innovation, to better understand how care is structured and who the program is a best fit for. He was candid and detailed about the way mental health care plans are designed to fit individual needs and progress.

“We recognize that positive outcomes are not the result of a single treatment approach, a strong therapeutic bond, or a client’s belief that treatment will help. Rather, they come from consistently integrating the best available research evidence, clinical expertise, and careful consideration of each client’s unique characteristics, cultural needs, and preferences to guide care.” — Michael Roeske, PsyD, senior director of Newport Healthcare's Center for Research and Innovation

Michael was transparent about the program’s emphasis on individualized attention, family participation, and making sure clients feel safe and comfortable during treatment.
