Clinician-Led Residential Care for Teens

Foothills at Red Oak Recovery offers residential treatment for boys ages 14–17. While the program’s administrative offices are in Asheville, all treatment takes place in the foothills setting. Care is provided by master’s-level clinicians dually licensed in addiction and mental health, using trauma-informed, evidence-based approaches tailored to the developmental needs of adolescents.

Nature-Based Environment and Experiential Therapies

The campus is a working horse farm bordered by creeks and forest, creating a safe, structured space away from city distractions. Teens live in the Main House, which includes shared bedrooms, a fitness center, classroom, and community kitchen. Daily life combines counseling with experiential activities. Equine therapy builds confidence, ropes courses and hiking encourage teamwork, and farm chores with horses, pigs, and calves teach responsibility. Gardening, camping, and river activities further support self-discovery.

Comprehensive and Inclusive Treatment

Foothills addresses substance use, trauma, and co-occurring mental health concerns such as anxiety, depression, and self-harm. Programs also support teens struggling with disordered eating or process addictions like gaming and technology overuse. Treatment integrates cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), motivational interviewing, relapse prevention, and twelve-step facilitation with recreation-based interventions. The program is inclusive of LGBTQ+ youth and also serves military families and teens with pain-related challenges.

Family, Academics, and Ongoing Support

Family involvement is a core part of recovery at Foothills. Counseling and education help strengthen communication and prepare caregivers to support progress at home. On-campus academics ensure students stay on track with school while developing executive function and life skills. Vocational experiences on the farm emphasize teamwork and accountability. Aftercare planning and alumni programming extend support beyond treatment, helping young men sustain progress and remain connected to recovery-focused peers and mentors.
