Residential addiction treatment for young adults with a trauma-first philosophy and an emphasis on group therapy. This facility emphasizes building peer communities while considering the developmental changes of young adulthood. In addition to daily group therapy, clients meet with an individual therapist, medical team, and continuing care coordinator every week. Treatment is built around the Meadows Model and focuses on addressing underlying trauma, addiction, and co-occurring mental health concerns. Holistic activities, like yoga, tai chi, fitness, and mindfulness, are woven into the daily schedule rather than being offered occasionally to support recovery or emotional regulation. The facility is in-network with several private insurance providers and will work with out-of-network providers. Financing options may also be available.

Who is this facility a good fit for?

  • Best fit if: Young adults (18+) whose substance use is intertwined with trauma or co-occurring mental health conditions; who prefer to be with peers and are comfortable with group therapy; want a highly scheduled structure with medical oversight, holistic activities, and group interaction; families looking for a program that emphasizes trauma recovery and family systems in addition to substance use treatment.

  • Not a fit if: Adults seeking treatment alongside an older adult population; want to focus primarily on individual therapy or are uncomfortable with group therapy; prefer a less structured or more independent experience.

What to expect

Developing your care plan

  • Before admission: Treatment planning begins with a pre-admission screening, which is reviewed by the clinical team before the client arrives.
  • Upon arrival: Clients meet with members of the treatment team directly to review the initial assessment. From there, they work together to establish treatment goals and individualized care plans.
  • Ongoing review: Clients meet with their care team every week to review progress and discuss any necessary changes.

Who you will meet with

  • Therapists: Clients will meet with therapists and other providers in group sessions several times a day, as well as individual therapists for weekly one-on-one sessions.
  • Medical team: A team of physicians, psychiatrists, and nurses is responsible for caring for clients during withdrawal management (detox) and any other physical needs throughout their stay.
  • Continuing care coordinator: Weekly meetings with a continuing care coordinator help clients build and refine an aftercare plan before their discharge date.

Typical schedule

  • Focus on structure: Every day features clinical programming (typically in the form of group therapy) and recreation. Clients also have the opportunity to participate in various holistic programs, such as yoga, tai chi, and mindfulness. Self-care activities are also integrated into treatment days.
  • Core programming throughout the day: After breakfast and time in the fitness center, clients spend the remainder of the morning in clinical programming, typically group sessions. These continue after lunch, followed by recreational time. After dinner, clients attend evening lectures and participate in additional treatment-related activities. Lights out is generally at 10 p.m.
  • Clinical experience: Clients spend most of their time in group therapy sessions where they learn alongside their peers. They also meet with an individual therapist, a psychiatrist, and their medical team once a week.

Living experiences and amenities

  • Designed for young adults and their families: The Claudia Black Center sits on a 14-acre campus near Phoenix in the Sonoran Desert. It’s open to all genders but offers gender-specific bedrooms and living spaces. While contact with clients is limited during treatment, families can receive weekly updates and psychoeducation from a therapist in the family department.
  • Recreational opportunities: Recreation is integrated into every day. Some options include playing popular lawn games, entering the labyrinth for mindfulness and meditation, swimming, or walking the grounds.

Aftercare

  • Planning for discharge while still in treatment: Weekly meetings with continuing care coordinators start at admission, designed to help clients refine their discharge plans as they prepare to leave residential treatment.

Pre-admissions experience

We conducted a series of pre-admissions calls, the most recent on July 9, 2026, to evaluate response time, transparency, and patient experience.

When we reached Claudia Black Center, the agent we spoke with was professional and helpful, though we did have to navigate through an automated menu before reaching a live person. They were informative about the intake and clinical process, but the call cut off twice, which limited our ability to gather information.

Facility transparency

  • Verified by Start Your Recovery: On July 22, 2026, our research team conducted a comprehensive review of this facility's advertising claims, registrations from public health departments, national accrediting bodies, and SAMHSA.
  • Pre-admissions experience evaluation: Most recent call conducted on July 9, 2026.
