Best Rehabs In-Network or Accepting UnitedHealthcare
Lexington, Kentucky

To help minimize your out-of-pocket costs, we rank rehabs fully in-network with UnitedHealthcare at the top of this list, followed by secondary options that accept UHC out-of-network. Because coverage varies significantly across HMO, PPO, and Choice plans, you must verify your exact policy details directly with the treatment center. Note: UHC sometimes uses their partner company Optum to handle mental health and substance use benefits. If you see Optum on your member portal or insurance card, that is why.

How to Choose a Rehab in Lexington If You Have UnitedHealthcare

Finding the right treatment can be overwhelming, but your UnitedHealthcare (UHC) insurance can make it easier to choose care. Most UHC plans cover life-saving addiction services.

Note: UHC sometimes uses their partner company Optum to handle mental health and substance use benefits. If you see Optum on your member portal or insurance card, that is why.

What does your specific UHC plan cover for addiction treatment?

Most UHC plans cover addiction treatment, but benefits vary widely. Knowing the type of plan you have will help you narrow your search for the right type of care. Coverage can come through an employer, the ACA marketplace, Medicare Advantage, or Medicaid and most UHC plans use one of the network types below. Network types determine which providers you can use and if you need a referral for specific services.

Plan Type Out-of-Network Coverage Is A Referral Required? What Does This Mean for How to Choose Care?
PPO (Preferred Provider Organization) Yes but generally at a higher cost No Offers a lot of flexibility to choose programs outside your area but out-of-network care usually costs more.
HMO (Health Maintenance Organization) No (except for emergencies) Yes You must choose an in-network provider and out-of-network is probably not covered at all.
EPO (Exclusive Provider Organization) No (except for emergencies) No Treatment is only covered if it is in-network and you usually don’t need a referral.
POS (Point of Service) Yes but generally at a higher cost Yes Combines components of HMO and PPO plans. You might need a referral for out-of-network care.

What does UHC cover for rehab?

UHC will review your specific care needs and your plan to make insurance coverage decisions like they would for other medical needs, such as a heart condition or diabetes. Because of federal parity law, coverage for addiction treatment cannot be more restrictive than coverage for other medical needs. Coverage through UHC varies by the type of plan you have and the state you reside in. Two people with UHC may have very different benefits, even for the same treatment program.

The following aspects of coverage usually vary by plan:

  • Deductibles, copays, and coinsurance
  • Prior authorization needs
  • How long treatment is approved for
  • Differences in coverage for levels of care
  • Out-of-pocket maximums that put a cap on how much you pay

It is also important to determine how your UHC plan would apply to the facilities you are interested in. If you reach out, a majority of rehabs will verify benefits for you for no cost and they can tell you whether the program is in network, what your potential costs could be, and if there are any limitations on length of stay for treatment.

How we evaluate facilities

Our research team reviews facilities using public data sources, information verified directly by contacting the facility, and information reported by the facility themselves. Whenever possible, we interview the clinical leadership of a facility and perform Secret Shopper calls to understand the patient experience. These inputs, along with data from SAMHSA, accrediting bodies (including Joint Commission and CARF), state licenses, and other sources help complete a full picture of the facility. These data help us develop Trust Score rating for each facility, a simple A+ through E grade helping you understand how likely it is you can trust a facility.

Why trust us

For over 10 years, Start Your Recovery has worked with leading experts in effectively treating substance use issues to offer people a single source of relatable, reliable information at any stage of their recovery journey. To do it, we bring together leading clinicians and experts in substance use prevention treatment and recovery from nonprofit, academic, and government institutions. We have connected more than 3 million people, and are committed to raising the bar for ethical communications that has a positive impact. We are not owned or operated by any treatment facility. We began as a pro-bono project in 2016 and became an independent LLC in 2021.

Important disclaimer

StartYourRecovery.org does not guarantee the quality of treatment of any facility. We cannot independently confirm the accuracy of every data point, and some data points may go out of date and change over time. Our Trust Score is an objective rating that is never influenced by advertiser payment. Please contact us if you would like to make an update to your facility information.
