A Long-Term, Women-Focused Approach to Recovery

STEP2 Lighthouse of the Sierra is a nonprofit treatment program in Reno, Nevada, dedicated exclusively to adult women seeking support for substance use disorders. The program serves women at different stages of recovery, including pregnant women and mothers, with an emphasis on breaking cycles of addiction and family violence.

Residential Treatment in a Campus Environment

Most women begin treatment at STEP2 in the Redfield Residential Facility, where they live on campus for approximately two to three months. Clients stay in shared, dormitory-style housing and receive up to 30 hours of therapeutic services each week. Treatment includes substance use counseling, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), trauma-informed groups, anger management, relapse prevention, and life skills education.

Transitional Housing That Supports Mothers and Children

One of STEP2’s most distinctive features is its Lighthouse Transitional Housing program. After completing residential treatment, women may move into on-campus cottages for a longer stay, typically lasting nine to twelve months. These fully furnished one-, two-, and three-bedroom homes allow children to live with their mothers while women continue treatment on campus. During this phase, women participate in ongoing therapy, parenting education, employment development, and case management, supporting family reunification and long-term housing stability.

Outpatient Care and Continued Community Support

STEP2 offers outpatient services for women transitioning out of residential or transitional housing, as well as those who already have safe housing in the community. Outpatient care provides continued individual and group counseling, parenting and childcare support, and assistance navigating healthcare, housing, and social services. Aftercare planning, discharge support, and follow-up services are designed to help clients maintain progress as they reenter the broader community.

Integrated, Trauma-Informed Services

Care addresses both substance use and co-occurring mental health needs. The program provides comprehensive mental health and substance use assessments, trauma-related counseling, domestic violence education, and suicide prevention services. Medications for addiction treatment (MAT) are available, including medications for opioid use disorder and alcohol use disorder, either provided on site or coordinated through external prescribing partners. Transportation assistance and a sliding fee scale help reduce barriers to care, reinforcing STEP2’s focus on long-term recovery and family stability.
