Short-Term Residential Care for Women

WAVES is a gender-specific residential program operated by Southern Highlands Community Mental Health Center. It provides short-term treatment for adult women living with substance use and co-occurring mental health disorders. The program accepts pregnant women up to 24 weeks and offers a structured environment with 24/7 staff presence and support. Each client participates in daily therapeutic groups, individual counseling, and recovery coaching to stabilize and begin their recovery.

Trauma-Informed and Gender-Responsive Support

WAVES integrates trauma-informed approaches and evidence-based therapies like cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), motivational interviewing, and trauma counseling. Clients attend support groups, including Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and Narcotics Anonymous (NA) meetings, virtually or on-site, under staff guidance. The daily schedule balances structured therapeutic engagement with peer connection and space for life skill development, addressing both clinical needs and daily life challenges.

Medications and Accountability for Recovery

The program offers access to medications for addiction treatment (MAT), including buprenorphine and naltrexone, through onsite services or outside providers. Clients receive education on overdose prevention and have access to naloxone as part of WAVES’ harm reduction practices. Regular drug testing and breathalyzer checks help foster accountability and progress throughout the program.

Preparing for Life After Treatment

In addition to therapy, clients engage in case management and recovery planning. Services include life skills training, vocational assistance, and help with accessing housing or other supports. WAVES prepares clients for next steps in recovery, and many transition into INSPIRES, Southern Highlands’ long-term residential program, for continued stabilization and care.

Inclusive, Community-Based Care

As a nonprofit program, WAVES accepts Medicaid and other insurance options and offers sliding scale fees and transportation assistance to reduce barriers to entry. The facility is inclusive of LGBTQ+ individuals, with staff training and policies to support affirming care. Sign language services are available, and smoking and vaping are permitted in designated areas.
