12-Step Recovery Approach

The center builds treatment around an abstinence-based model supported by the 12 steps. Adults work with a dedicated team that includes medical staff, counselors, psychologists, and spiritual providers who help them understand how addiction affects health, relationships, and daily functioning. Programs support clients with co-occurring needs such as chronic pain and trauma histories. Care plans emphasize consistent participation in 12-step groups and link clients to local volunteers who help them navigate early recovery.

Full Continuum of Care

As a department of Licking Memorial Hospital, Shepherd Hill offers hospital inpatient detox, residential treatment, a partial hospitalization program (PHP) with an overnight component, intensive outpatient programming (IOP), and standard outpatient services. Clinicians use American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) criteria to place clients in the right level of care and reassess needs weekly. This model supports people who may require medical stabilization early on and later benefit from step-down care as they regain stability.

MAT and Psychiatric Services

Depending on client needs, clinical staff can provide medications for addiction treatment (MAT) to help ease cravings and withdrawal symptoms. Clients can also receive medication support for co-occurring mental health concerns when needed. The on-site psychiatric team conducts evaluations, manages medications, and provides counseling, allowing clients to stabilize both physical and mental health in one location. Detox includes medical supervision, and psychiatric care continues across levels of treatment.

Education, Family Support, and Daily Routines

Clients participate in daily lectures to learn about addiction, cravings, relapse patterns, and the medical aspects of substance use. Therapeutic programming includes individual counseling, group therapy, and activities focused on rebuilding healthy routines. Recreational offerings such as yoga, swimming, and off-site fitness opportunities support physical health and stress reduction. Families can attend free educational programs and monthly “Ask the Doc” sessions to better understand addiction, its impact, and ways to support a loved one without losing sight of their own needs.
