Community-Based Care with a Lasting Legacy

Founded in 1973, Farrell Treatment Center has served as a cornerstone of recovery in the greater Hartford area for more than five decades. Housed in the historic St. Mary’s convent, the nonprofit provides a structured yet home-like environment that balances professional care with compassion. As part of Gilead Community Services, Farrell links clients to a wider continuum of mental health and community resources throughout Connecticut.

Comprehensive and Accessible Treatment

Farrell offers residential, intensive outpatient (IOP), and outpatient programs tailored to each client’s needs. The residential program for men provides 24-hour clinical supervision, individual and group therapy, psychiatric care, and access to medications for addiction treatment (MAT). Outpatient and IOP programs, available to both men and women, address substance use and co-occurring mental health disorders through evidence-based therapies and specialized groups focused on trauma, grief, stress management, anger, and relapse prevention. Although Farrell does not offer detox onsite, staff coordinate referrals to trusted withdrawal management partners to ensure seamless entry into care.

Supportive Setting that Feels Like Home

Inside the restored convent, clients find a welcoming and restorative environment. Bedrooms are equipped with basic furnishings and desks, and each floor has renovated communal bathrooms. Residents share three home-cooked meals daily in the on-site cafeteria and have access to recreation areas, including a fitness room, a library space with books and games, and an outdoor basketball court. This warm, community-oriented atmosphere helps clients regain structure and connection during early recovery.

Ongoing Support and Affordability

Farrell’s continuum of care extends beyond discharge through relapse prevention groups, peer mentoring, recovery coaching, and referrals to sober living or community programs. The center’s 24-hour admissions process helps ensure timely access to treatment, while its nonprofit mission keeps care affordable. Farrell accepts Medicaid, Medicare, and select private insurance, and offers sliding-scale options and state-funded coverage so that financial barriers never prevent someone from getting help.
