AMFM Mental Health Treatment
Overview
Small-group residential mental health treatment for adults in a private, upscale home with intensive, trauma-informed therapies. Each house has only six clients and a high staff-to-client ratio, allowing clinicians to dedicate maximum individual attention to each person’s needs. Clients stay in gender-separate accommodations, participate in one-on-one therapy sessions twice a week, and meet with a psychiatrist and a case manager weekly. Evidence-based therapies are combined with meditation, yoga, fitness, and nutrition. Medications can be prescribed and adjusted as needed. AMFM accepts private insurance and self-pay. Payment assistance options may be available.

Who is this facility a good fit for?
Best fit if: Adults with serious mental health conditions; need 24/7 supervision in a highly structured program; want psychiatric care, medication management, and frequent therapy; want a small residential setting with a small group size; have private insurance or can self-pay (assistance options may be available).
Not a fit if: Require acute hospital-level care; unwilling to live on campus in a 24-hour structured setting; need detox or primary substance use disorder treatment; have significant mobility issues; rely on Medi-Cal or Medicare for coverage, or are uninsured and unable to self-pay.
What to expect
Developing your care plan
- First 24 hours: Treatment starts with a one-hour intake with nursing and medical coordinators to review medical history, allergies, and medications. When they first arrive, clients are on “one-on-ones” (accompanied by staff at all times) until a full suicide screening and safety plan are completed.
- Goal development: Once transported to their residential estate, clients sit down with a clinician for a 45-to-60-minute assessment to outline their psychiatric history and create goals for the coming weeks. Clients are fully involved in the creation of their care plans.
- Continuing reassessment: Treatment plans are reviewed and updated regularly with the client's primary therapist. Clients also meet with their psychiatrist once a week and their primary therapist twice a week for one-on-one sessions. Length of stay is determined by clinical progress rather than fixed timelines.
Who you will meet with
- Licensed therapists: A primary therapist is the core of the treatment team and clients’ main point of contact. One-on-one therapy takes place twice each week.
- Clinical case manager: A role designed to help clients manage outside stressors and reintegration. This can include help with paying bills, resume building, and completing FMLA or EDD paperwork.
- Psychiatrists: Clients meet with a psychiatrist at least once a week. Mental health medications can be prescribed and adjusted as appropriate.
- Client Coordinators (CCs): Each house has two CCs available 24 hours a day to assist with medication passes, general household support, and 15-minute safety checks using “Visible Hands” wristbands.
- Focused individual care: With a maximum of six clients per house, AMFM is a high-touch environment with full-time staff, including a personal chef.
“At any given time, there is a minimum of four staff in the house... there's always going to be a therapist, a case manager and two CCs around. Not counting facilitators, chefs, all of that.” - Anand Mehta, LMFT, AMFM Executive Director (San Diego)
Typical schedule
- Daily clinical work (10 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.): This block consists of three 90-minute group therapy sessions a day, individual therapy sessions twice weekly, and psychiatric appointments weekly.
- Evenings (5 p.m. - lights out): Downtime is intentional. Clients might attend AA or NA meetings, go for a hike or community walk for physical fitness, or participate in a game night to practice social skills.
- Chef-prepared and intentional meals: A personal chef prepares lunch and dinner, but breakfast is intentionally left for the clients to prepare themselves using stocked ingredients. This acts as functional skill-building practice.
- Wellness and nutrition: Clients can participate in yoga, meditation, and fitness groups, as well as nutrition groups led by chefs trained in food as medicine.
- Weekend activities: Outings are designed to practice life skills, such as a group of housemates collaboratively deciding to go to the movies, buying tickets, and interacting with concessions.
“We have really embraced that every day is a clinical day, whether it's Christmas or Sunday morning. So something is happening every day.” - Anand Mehta, LMFT, AMFM Executive Director (San Diego)
Living experiences and amenities
- Upscale accommodations: Treatment takes place in spacious modern houses. Clients stay in shared, air-conditioned bedrooms with personal desks.
- Outdoor spaces: Clients have access to walking trails, outdoor lounges, a patio area, and shaded outdoor dining tables.
- Sports: The facilities include a swimming pool, a basketball court, and dedicated wellness spaces.
- Fitness: Clients can meet with a physical fitness trainer three times a week.
Aftercare
- Transition planning: AMFM uses dedicated “Clinical Liaisons” to act as aftercare planners. These liaisons handle the logistics of moving a client to their next step, whether that is a partial hospitalization program (PHP) or an intensive outpatient program (IOP), and they manage the financial and administrative conversations.
