Who is this facility a good fit for?
Best fit if: Teens ages 12–17 seeking support for substance use, co-occurring mental health conditions, or trauma; teens who can benefit from a program with a choice-based philosophy; families looking for a long-term program that combines therapy, school, recreation, family involvement, and daily structure.
Not a fit if: Young adults over age 17; families that do not want to make a 9–12 month commitment; families seeking a luxury treatment experience for their children.
What to expect
Developing your care plan
- First steps: The admission process begins with a consultation and assessment. This process also includes a medical evaluation and drug testing.
- An individualized approach: The clinical team creates tailored treatment plans for each client, basing the approach on the teen’s mental health and behavioral needs.
- A Core Values system: Treatment plans use the facility’s 8 Core Values system and natural consequences. The goal is to help teens connect their decisions to outcomes. Skills learned in therapy are reinforced throughout school, peer relationships, family work, and ordinary daily activities.
Who you will meet with
- Licensed therapists: Therapists lead individual, group, and family therapy sessions. They use various types of therapy, like cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), as well as Seeking Safety and trauma-focused approaches.
- *Certified teachers: Through partnering with Coral Sands Academy, teachers support learning, helping teens work toward completing their high school diploma or GED.
- *Peer support: Peers are part of the therapeutic environment. They may lead AA or NA groups or provide 12-Step education.
- Medical team: Medical and psychiatric support is available to clients throughout treatment.
Typical schedule
- Therapy sessions: Individual therapy is woven throughout the week. Teens have individual sessions one to three times a week and interact with their therapists in both formal and informal settings. Group therapy takes place two to three times a day, and family therapy takes place once a week.
- *Education: School is a substantial part of everyday life, which includes traditional classroom studies as well as educational outings and service projects. Education also includes opportunities to acquire real-world job skills.
- Group meetings: Teens may attend weekly AA or NA meetings on and off campus.
- Other activities: When not in therapy, groups, or school activities, teens can exercise, play games, or attend educational outings, work on service projects, or participate in adventure outings, like horseback riding. In the evenings, teens have time for group reflection and journaling to help them consider their choices, goals, and progress.
Living experiences and amenities
- Structured peer environment: Teens attend school, groups, and activities with their peers and stay in private and semi-private rooms.
- Downtime activities: Teens also have access to a range of on-site amenities, including a basketball court, fitness center, and games. There are also plenty of ways to get outside, like an outdoor lounge, access to nature, and adventure outings.
- Family time: In addition to weekly family therapy, teens stay in touch via scheduled family visits and phone calls.
Aftercare
- Transition plans: An aftercare coordinator develops a transition plan for each client to prepare teens and their families to transition back to home.
- Education with a focus on finding direction: Throughout the program, education focuses on keeping teens academically engaged with an educational or vocational direction.
