Therapy, School, and Daily Structure

White River Academy is a residential treatment center and therapeutic boarding school for adolescent boys in Delta, Utah. Its model combines mental health and substance use treatment with an accredited academic program, allowing teens to keep up with their schoolwork while receiving care. Students live on-site while taking part in therapy, coursework, and daily routines built around accountability, emotional growth, and practical life skills.

Specialized Support for Trauma, Behavioral Issues, and Process Addictions

The program treats a range of concerns, including trauma, anxiety, depression, ADHD, substance use, family conflict, and compulsive behaviors such as problematic gaming, internet use, pornography use, and sexual compulsivity. White River Academy uses cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), group therapy, individual counseling, family therapy, and trauma-informed care. It encompasses a Developmental Vacation model, which focuses on interrupting unhealthy patterns, reducing dependence on harmful coping habits, and helping teens practice more age-appropriate responsibility and self-regulation.

Experiential Programming

A defining part of the program is its experiential approach. Equine and animal therapy give students opportunities to build trust, responsibility, and emotional awareness through hands-on work with horses. The Great Basin setting also supports hiking, rock climbing, fitness, and other outdoor activities that add movement, routine, and challenge to the treatment experience. Teens also participate in community service projects that connect treatment goals to follow-through, teamwork, and contribution beyond campus.

Family Involvement and Preparation for Life at Home

Family participation is built into the program through family therapy, parent communication, and quarterly parent weekends. For families seeking a longer-term residential option for a teen who needs structure, academic continuity, and support for both mental health and compulsive behaviors, this combination can be notably beneficial.
