Men’s residential treatment program with a brotherhood model

The Chester A. Ray Center provides residential substance use treatment for adult men. Stays last up to 90 days with programming focused on a brotherhood model. Clients have the opportunity to live alongside peers who can relate to their challenges and participate in recovery support groups such as Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) or Narcotics Anonymous (NA) to reinforce peer connections. Clients also work with certified recovery coaches who are in recovery themselves for additional support.

A focus on practical issues to prepare for life after residential treatment

Treatment extends beyond counseling, helping clients address practical issues to prepare for their return to community life. Case managers connect clients with resources and other support in the community. During their stay, clients work toward finding employment, doing volunteer work, and addressing housing needs. Men who secure a job or volunteer position may be approved for an alternative treatment timeline, allowing them to rebuild a daily work routine while still in residential treatment.

A highly structured environment with rules and expectations

The program has concrete policies that clients must follow, starting with admission. Admission requires at least 72 hours of abstinence from substances, an interest in recovery, and a willingness to participate in groups. Clients attend a range of activities, including treatment sessions and lectures; they can bring cell phones and headphones, but other electronics are prohibited. There are also eight smoke breaks scheduled throughout the day.

Treatment can address trauma and co-occurring mental health conditions

The center provides integrated treatment for substance use and co-occurring mental health conditions and trauma. The clinical team includes master’s-level therapists and certified advanced alcohol and drug counselors, as well as a medical team that manages medications and coordinates care. Case managers help residents connect with necessary resources and other types of support.

A home-like environment with room for recreation and community

The living environment includes a sofa, TV, kitchenette, and relaxation lounge, with outdoor gardens and access to nature. Clients can participate in various activities, from walking to volunteering, community involvement, and AA or NA meetings.
