Located on a wooded hillside in Duluth, Howard Friese Hillside provides residential treatment for men recovering from substance use and co-occurring mental health disorders. Operated by a private nonprofit organization, the 24-bed program offers trauma-responsive, person-centered care with 24/7 supervision. The setting encourages focus, safety, and structure while helping residents strengthen coping skills and build supportive peer connections.

Evidence-Based Counseling and Recovery Skills

Treatment incorporates evidence-based approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), motivational interviewing, relapse prevention, and anger management. Through group and individual counseling, residents build insight, emotional regulation, and the practical life skills needed for independent living. Educational sessions focus on daily routines, communication, and decision-making, tools that support lasting recovery.

Building Stability Beyond Treatment

The program emphasizes real-world reintegration. Staff coordinate services to help residents secure employment, reconnect with family or support networks, and find stable housing. Integrated Medical and Medication Support

Howard Friese Hillside offers on-site medical and psychiatric care, supported by a clinical pharmacist who manages medication needs. The program provides access to medications for addiction treatment (MAT), including suboxone and methadone, and supports residents using medications for alcohol use disorder prescribed elsewhere. As part of the Center for Alcohol and Drug Treatment, Hillside connects to detox, withdrawal management, outpatient, and telehealth programs, ensuring continuity of care across all recovery stages.
