How to Choose a Rehab in Chicago If You Have UnitedHealthcare
Finding the right treatment can be overwhelming, but your UnitedHealthcare (UHC) insurance can make it easier to choose care. Most UHC plans cover life-saving addiction services.
Note: UHC sometimes uses their partner company Optum to handle mental health and substance use benefits. If you see Optum on your member portal or insurance card, that is why.
What does your specific UHC plan cover for addiction treatment?
Most UHC plans cover addiction treatment, but benefits vary widely. Knowing the type of plan you have will help you narrow your search for the right type of care. Coverage can come through an employer, the ACA marketplace, Medicare Advantage, or Medicaid and most UHC plans use one of the network types below. Network types determine which providers you can use and if you need a referral for specific services.

What does UHC cover for rehab?
UHC will review your specific care needs and your plan to make insurance coverage decisions like they would for other medical needs, such as a heart condition or diabetes. Because of federal parity law, coverage for addiction treatment cannot be more restrictive than coverage for other medical needs. Coverage through UHC varies by the type of plan you have and the state you reside in. Two people with UHC may have very different benefits, even for the same treatment program.
The following aspects of coverage usually vary by plan:
- Deductibles, copays, and coinsurance
- Prior authorization needs
- How long treatment is approved for
- Differences in coverage for levels of care
- Out-of-pocket maximums that put a cap on how much you pay
It is also important to determine how your UHC plan would apply to the facilities you are interested in. If you reach out, a majority of rehabs will verify benefits for you for no cost and they can tell you whether the program is in network, what your potential costs could be, and if there are any limitations on length of stay for treatment.

Across the site, our team has conducted over 1,000 pre-admissions calls to better understand the patient experience, interviewed facility clinical leaders, performed facility background checks, and compared our information against trusted public data sources.
Our research process begins with data from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), accrediting bodies including The Joint Commission and CARF, government licensing agencies, and other trusted sources. From there, our team conducts significant original research, including:
- Pre-admissions calls: We speak with admissions staff to get a candid picture of patient experience.
- Background checks: We review complaints from past clients, media reports, actions taken by accrediting bodies, and positive recognition from notable organizations.
- Clinical interviews: We have in-depth conversations with clinical leadership, often lasting up to one hour, that give us a better understanding of clinical care.
- Data partnerships: We ingest and analyze exclusive data that provides information about in-network insurance status, cost, and more.

These data help us develop a Trust Score for each facility—a simple letter grade that helps you assess how much confidence to place in a facility based on the information available to us. Trust Score considers accreditation, operating history, notable recognition, and concerns identified during our background check. How we rank our results
The most important factor in our ranking algorithm is the Trust Score. We also consider a facility’s proximity to you, availability status, and profile completeness when determining sort order. When certain filters are selected—or on pages specifically tailored to certain needs—we also heavily weigh a facility’s relevance to your stated needs. Some availability information comes from facilities with which we have a direct relationship, including paid relationships, but payment never affects a facility’s Trust Score.
