County-Run, Trauma-Informed Treatment
Charleston Center of Charleston County offers prevention, intervention, education, and treatment in one trauma-informed setting. They view addiction as a chronic, progressive disease and focus on active recovery, serving adults, teens, older adults, and people involved in the justice system in a structured environment in North Charleston.
Specialized Residential Care for Women and Parents
A key feature is the New Life Unit, a long-term residential program for pregnant and parenting women addressing substance use disorders. Women can live on site with up to two children ages newborn to five, with 24-hour medical monitoring and on-site licensed childcare. Treatment weaves in parenting support, trauma-related work, anger management, nutrition, and community support groups, helping families stay together while a parent focuses on recovery.
Full Continuum From Detox to Outpatient
The center provides a full continuum of substance use care, including medically supervised withdrawal management, residential treatment, intensive and regular outpatient services, and a 24/7 helpline. Withdrawal management is medically monitored by addiction-trained medical staff, with medications for addiction treatment (MAT) and mental health conditions used when appropriate. Once stabilized, clients can step into the Transitional Care Unit, outpatient counseling, or other services matched to their needs.
Support for Adults, Teens, and Justice-Involved Clients
Adult men and women can access the Transitional Care Unit for several weeks of intensive residential treatment that addresses family, relationships, spirituality, self-esteem, and recovery maintenance. Adolescents receive their own assessment process, outpatient individual and group counseling, and strong family involvement. The center also operates Sobering Services for adults involved with the justice system.
Practical Supports to Reduce Barriers
To make treatment more accessible, Charleston Center offers transportation assistance, case management, and help obtaining social services and housing. Clients can join self-help and peer support groups, receive HIV and hepatitis education, and continue with aftercare and outcome follow-up after discharge. Fees are based on ability to pay and the center doesn’t turn anyone away for inability to pay, so people can get care even with limited resources.
