What to expect
Developing your care plan
- Assessments: Staff conduct an initial assessment over the phone to gather details on clients’ substance use and mental health history, as well as their personal needs and goals. When treatment begins, clinicians perform a diagnostic assessment to determine the right level of care.
- Adapted planning and reassessment: Once clients arrive at the facility, they are assigned a primary therapist and a case manager. These professionals work with the client to create an individualized treatment plan which can be adjusted as the program progresses.
Who you will meet with
- Therapists: A primary therapist leads weekly one-on-one and family sessions. Family therapy sessions are conducted via telehealth. Licensed counselors lead daily group therapy sessions.
- Psychiatrists: Work with clients who have co-occurring mental health conditions or concerns.
- Doctors: Perform medical and nutrition consultations.
- Case managers: Assist with practical needs and planning for long-term recovery.
Typical schedule
- Structured days: Morning groups are held from about 9-11 a.m. In the afternoons, groups take place approximately 1:30-5:30 p.m. with a break in between. An optional evening group may be held after dinner.
- Evidence-based and holistic therapies: Methods include cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), art therapy, yoga, and fitness.
- Young adult program: In this program, care is framed around topics including academic demands, social pressures, and the challenges of starting independent living. Peer support and family therapy are woven into treatment.
Living experiences and amenities
- Shared accommodations: Bedrooms are shared between two or three roommates. Bathrooms are ADA-accessible with shower benches available.
- Recreation: Between therapy sessions, clients can use an on-site gym, play ping pong or cornhole, or relax and socialize in an outdoor courtyard with a walking path.
- Cafeteria-style meals: Prepared by a chef and two cooks.
Aftercare
- Step-down process: The center offers a full continuum of care — medical withdrawal management, residential treatment, a partial hospitalization program (PHP), an intensive outpatient program (IOP), and regular outpatient treatment. Clients can step up or down between levels as their needs change.
- Lifetime alumni program: Promises Brazos offers a Rooted alumni program which hosts weekly meetings, speakers, community events, peer mentorship, and private social media groups. Graduates from the facility become members for life.
