Dedicated opioid, heroin, and fentanyl treatment
AMS of Delaware focuses on opioid use disorder, including heroin and fentanyl use, in an outpatient setting. MAT is used to manage withdrawal and cravings so clients can be more present and engaged in counseling and make necessary changes. Cognitive, behavioral, and motivational counseling approaches are integrated into care.
Options for medication maintenance
In addition to traditional MAT, AMS of Delaware also offers a Maintenance to Abstinence Program for clients with opioid addiction that follows a two-year path from medication stabilization to abstinence. Clients first stabilize using opioid treatment services, then progress through medically supervised withdrawal management.
Practical and clearly defined access to care
Opioid treatment begins with an intake process involving a counselor, nurse, and physician. It takes between two and four hours and includes a review of substance use history and physical exam. To be eligible for opioid treatment, clients must be at least 18 and have had opioid use disorder for at least one year. Admissions can be scheduled in advance, and walk-in admissions are offered every Wednesday morning from 5–7:30 a.m.
Structured IOP with flexibility
The IOP meets four days a week for 2.25 hours a day (a total of nine hours a week) for eight weeks. Day and evening sessions are available to accommodate different schedules. This program combines cognitive behavioral and motivational approaches with classroom-style education, life skills training, relapse prevention, and peer support. While 12-Step approaches are integrated into programming, alternatives, such as SMART Recovery, The Most Excellent Way, and Celebrate Recovery, are also introduced for clients who are interested in other approaches.
Family involvement and ongoing support
Less intensive outpatient programming is also available, including individual, group, and family counseling. One weekly group is offered for clients and family members, and another weekly group is specifically for family members. This programming includes education about substance use and treatment, as well as support for setting boundaries and strengthening family relationships. Other types of support may include relapse prevention and recovery monitoring, which provide ongoing accountability.
