Wellspring’s Men’s Residential Program provides long-term treatment for adult men with substance use and co-occurring mental health conditions. Established in 1968, it is one of Maine’s oldest programs and continues to operate in a city-based residential setting. Typical stays run 4–6 months, offering structure, accountability, and therapeutic support in a close-knit community environment.

Evidence-Based Treatment and Counseling

The program integrates individual, family, and group counseling with psycho-educational groups focused on addiction, relapse prevention, and self-awareness. Approaches include cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), motivational interviewing, anger management, and relapse prevention planning. Residents also participate in twelve-step meetings or similar recovery groups. The program accepts residents who are prescribed medications for addiction treatment (MAT) through outside providers.

Building Life Skills and Community Connections

Recovery is supported through daily responsibilities like cooking, cleaning, and time management, as well as regular house meetings and meditations. Over time, residents may earn weekend passes, attend off-site recovery activities, and begin volunteer work, employment, or further education. Staff provide case management, job training, housing assistance, and transportation support, helping residents transition to independence and stability beyond treatment.

Family Engagement and Admission

Family involvement is encouraged, with visits from spouses, children, and close relatives welcomed under program guidelines. Admission requires applicants to be 18 or older, substance-free on the day of entry, able to participate in a therapeutic community, and motivated to engage in recovery. Each resident leaves with an aftercare plan and follow-up support to promote sustained recovery.
