Rural North Dakota Setting and Structured Care
On the rural outskirts of Cando, Heartview Foundation offers space to step away from everyday stress and focus on treatment. Residential care includes round-the-clock staff presence, daily groups, and set mealtimes, creating predictable routines that can make early recovery feel more manageable. For people who do not need to stay overnight, day treatment, intensive outpatient, and other outpatient options provide structure while allowing them to keep some daily responsibilities.
Detox, Medications, and Counseling in One Program
Care begins with comprehensive medical, mental health, and substance use assessments. When detox is needed, nursing and medical staff provide medically monitored withdrawal support for alcohol, opioids, stimulants, and other substances. Medications for addiction treatment (MAT), including options for opioid and alcohol use disorders, are offered alongside individual, group, and family counseling, as well as approaches like cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), motivational interviewing, relapse prevention, and trauma-related counseling. Telehealth visits may be available when in-person care is not possible, and admissions staff can explain which specific medications are currently offered.
Equine Therapy, Therapy Dog, and Wellness Activities
Cando integrates experiential and animal-assisted therapies into its residential program. Equine Assisted Growth and Learning Association (EAGALA) horse therapy and time with a therapy dog give people additional ways to process emotions, practice communication, and rebuild trust. Yoga, meditation, creative art sessions, massage and acupuncture rooms, and indoor recreation with games and television offer practical tools for managing stress. Supervised community outings, such as movies, bowling, gym visits, and recovery meetings, help people practice new coping skills in real-world settings.
Transportation, Practical Support, and Aftercare Planning
Support extends beyond clinical sessions. Case managers assist with transportation to treatment, housing resources, and connecting people to social services and benefits. Education on substance use, health topics, smoking and vaping cessation, anger management, and parenting supports day-to-day life. Heartview accepts major private insurance plans, Medicaid, the North Dakota SUD voucher, and private pay, and staff can help people explore financial assistance. Discharge planning, aftercare and continuing care, naloxone and overdose education, and follow-up after discharge are built into the process so people leave with a concrete plan for staying connected to support.
