Supportive Housing for Men Rebuilding Stability

Albert O. Nichols House provides a structured living environment for men who are recovering from substance use and mental health disorders and need a stable place to live while preparing for greater independence. Located in a calm Herkimer neighborhood close to parks, community resources, and public transportation, the home offers outdoor space and a residential atmosphere that helps residents settle into consistent routines. It is designed for men who are homeless or whose living situations are not compatible with recovery, giving them a safe foundation to move forward.

A Values-Based Living Environment

The home was established in honor of Albert O. Nichols, a World War I veteran and local business owner whose values of strength, integrity, and hard work shape the program’s approach today. These principles influence daily expectations, shared responsibilities, and the way residents engage with one another. Living alongside peers working toward similar goals creates a sense of belonging, encourages accountability, and helps residents practice healthier communication in day-to-day life.

Counseling and Mental Health Support Through Outpatient Care

Residents who enter the program are evaluated to determine their outpatient counseling needs. While living in the home, they can access therapy through Beacon Center’s outpatient services, including individual and group counseling, trauma support, anger management, and family counseling. Beacon Center also treats conditions such as depression, anxiety, PTSD, schizophrenia, grief, stress, and trauma. Residents may continue medications for addiction (MAT) or mental health prescribed elsewhere, maintaining continuity of care while they build stability in a structured living environment.

Life Skills, Vocational Support, and Preparation for Independent Living

A core feature of the program is its emphasis on practical skills that help residents transition successfully into the community. Life-skills support may include community living skills, personal care, parenting training, and help navigating daily responsibilities. Vocational and educational services provide job-readiness preparation, supporting residents as they work toward financial stability. By the time they prepare to leave the program, residents have had opportunities to strengthen recovery habits, build support systems, and develop the skills needed to maintain a home and pursue employment or education.
