Culturally Responsive, Whole-Person Recovery

Hoy Recovery Program Inc provides nonprofit substance use treatment for adults (18+) with a focus on culturally responsive, trauma-informed care rooted in Northern New Mexico. The program takes a whole-person approach, addressing physical, emotional, social, and spiritual aspects of recovery in a non-denominational setting. Individuals who wish to explore a relationship with a Higher Power are supported in doing so, while care remains inclusive and grounded in respect for each person’s lived experience.

A Riverside, Ranch-Style Residential Environment

Treatment takes place on a quiet, 40-acre campus along the Rio Grande, offering space for reflection, routine, and connection to nature. The residential program operates 24 hours a day, with typical stays ranging from 30 to 90 days. Clients live in semi-private rooms with private bathrooms and gender-specific residence halls, creating a structured living environment that supports safety, stability, and focus during treatment. Outdoor space, gardens, and on-site farm animals are integrated into daily life rather than treated as add-ons.

Medically Supported Detox and Stabilization

Hoy offers withdrawal management (detox) with monitoring and medications to help manage withdrawal symptoms safely and comfortably. Admission to detox includes an initial medical evaluation through a local hospital clinic, with medications dispensed by certified staff. Individuals may transition directly from detox into residential treatment when appropriate. For opioid use disorder, the program may use medications such as buprenorphine and naltrexone, and it can accept clients who are using medications for addiction treatment prescribed by an external provider.

Therapy, Daily Structure, and Preparation for Life After Treatment

Treatment includes individual, group, and family counseling, with programming that may incorporate cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), motivational interviewing, relapse prevention, trauma-related counseling, and optional 12-step facilitation. Daily schedules are reinforced through experiential and wellness-based activities such as agricultural therapy, fitness, art, yoga, meditation, acupuncture, and life-skills training. As treatment progresses, clients work with a counselor and aftercare coordinator or case manager on discharge planning and continuing care, including connections to community resources, housing-related services, peer support, social services, and referrals for outpatient or intensive outpatient care. Spanish-language services are also available.

Client Reviews

Many clients describe strong recovery gains and a grounded setting that helps them focus. Some reviews point to gaps in communication and family involvement that could be clearer and more consistent.

  • Treatment Quality & Outcomes (70% positive): Many clients describe meaningful progress — including learning coping skills, completing the program, and staying in recovery after leaving. "Hoy saved my life and taught me how to live a satisfying life"
  • Facility & Environment: Clients describe a simple, rural environment — more “working farm” than resort — and a place that feels practical and focused. "It is a farm in the Rio Grande Valley of Velarde, New Mexico"
  • Access & Process: Feedback is mixed on communication and expectations; some clients say the program works best when you’re ready to follow the structure, while others describe limited family contact and frustrating coordination. "Hoy is a great program but you have to want it"
  • Support & Community: A few clients mention connecting with peers and building friendships that supported them during treatment. "I met some good friends at Hoy"
