AMFM Mental Health Treatment
Overview
Small-group residential mental health treatment for adults in a trauma-informed, home-like environment with private room options. Each house only takes eight clients at once and has a high staff-to-client ratio, allowing clinicians to connect with each person and adjust treatment as often as needed. The program is clinically intensive, with daily groups and one-on-one therapy sessions twice a week. Clients also meet with a psychiatrist and a case manager weekly. Evidence-based approaches are blended with art and equine therapy, and group outings give clients a chance to spend time together enjoying community attractions. This facility accepts private insurance and self-pay. Payment assistance options may be available.

Who is this facility a good fit for?
Best fit if: Adults with serious mental health conditions; need 24/7 supervision in a highly structured program; want psychiatric care, medication management, and frequent therapy; looking for a small residential setting with a small group size; have private insurance or can self-pay (assistance options may be available).
Not a fit if: Require acute hospital-level care; unwilling to live on campus in a 24-hour structured setting; need detoxification or primary substance use disorder treatment; have significant mobility issues; rely on Medicaid or Medicare for coverage, or are uninsured and unable to self-pay.
What to expect
Developing your care plan
- First 24 hours: Treatment starts with an intake session with nursing and medical coordinators to review medical history, allergies, and medications. From the moment they arrive, clients are on “one-on-ones” (accompanied by staff at all times) until a full suicide screening and safety plan are completed.
- Personal assessments and goals: Once transported to their residential house, clients sit down with a clinician for an assessment to outline their psychiatric history and create goals for the coming weeks. Clients are fully involved in the creation of their care plans.
- Ongoing reassessment: Treatment plans are reviewed and updated regularly with a primary therapist. Length of stay is determined by clinical progress rather than fixed timelines.
Who you will meet with
- Therapists: A primary therapist is the core of the treatment team whom the client interacts with most heavily for their clinical needs. One-on-one therapy takes place twice each week.
- Psychiatrists: Clients meet with a psychiatrist at least once a week. Mental health medications can be prescribed and adjusted as appropriate.
- Case managers: Clinical case managers help clients manage outside stressors and reintegration. They help with paying bills, resume building, and completing FMLA or EDD paperwork. Clients meet with case managers once a week.
- In-house care: With approximately eight clients per house, AMFM is a high-touch environment with full-time staff, including a personal chef.
“At any given time, there is a minimum of four staff in the house... there's always going to be a therapist, a case manager and two CCs around. Not counting facilitators, chefs, all of that.” - Anand Mehta, LMFT, AMFM Executive Director (San Diego)
Typical schedule
- Intensive daily programming: This block is strictly for deep clinical work, featuring three group therapy sessions a day, two individual therapy sessions per week, and weekly psychiatric appointments.
- Evenings: Downtime is intentional. Clients might attend AA or NA meetings, go for a hike or community walk for physical fitness, or participate in a game night to practice social skills.
- Chef-prepared and intentional meals: A personal chef prepares lunch and dinner, but breakfast is intentionally left for the clients to prepare themselves using stocked ingredients. This acts as functional skill-building.
- Weekend activities: Outings are designed to practice life skills, such as a group of housemates collaboratively deciding to go to the movies, buying tickets, and interacting with concessions. Sometimes staff take clients on trips to nearby farms.
- Holistic and wellness groups: During their residential stay, clients can participate in yoga, meditation, and fitness groups, as well as nutrition groups led by chefs trained in food as medicine.
“We have really embraced that every day is a clinical day, whether it's Christmas or Sunday morning. So something is happening every day.” - Anand Mehta, LMFT, AMFM Executive Director (San Diego)
Living experiences and amenities
- Accommodations: Private or shared bedroom options are available. Living rooms and lounge areas offer space for clients to read, journal, or connect with peers between therapy sessions.
- Wellness areas: Clients have space to participate in activities like stretching, mindfulness, and light fitness.
- Animal-assisted and expressive therapies: Art and music activities provide creative outlets for processing emotions, and equine therapy allows clients to work with horses in a structured therapeutic setting.
- Nature-rich setting: The property includes plenty of trees and green space, giving residents access to fresh air and a natural setting for reflection.
Aftercare
- Transition planning: AMFM uses dedicated “Clinical Liaisons” to act as aftercare planners. These liaisons handle the logistics of moving a client to their next step, whether that is a partial hospitalization program (PHP) or an intensive outpatient program (IOP), and they manage the financial and administrative conversations.
