Red Oak Recovery
Overview
Nestled on a sprawling, retreat-style campus in the Blue Ridge Mountains, Red Oak Recovery provides residential treatment and extended care for men addressing substance use and co-occurring mental health conditions. A 12-step foundation is combined with activities like canoeing, rock climbing, and ropes courses, giving men a physical outlet for stress and space to heal among nature. An alumni program keeps clients connected to long-term peer support.

Expert-Led, Trauma-Informed Treatment
The center is run by clinicians, and many leaders and staff hold master’s or doctoral-level licenses in both mental health and substance use treatment. Care is trauma-informed and grounded in evidence-based therapies such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR). Medications for addiction treatment (MAT) and psychiatric support are available to help manage withdrawal, cravings, and mental health symptoms so clients can fully engage in therapy.
Full Continuum of Care and Extended Support
Red Oak Recovery offers a full continuum of care, including residential treatment, day treatment (PHP), intensive outpatient programs (IOP), outpatient therapy, and an extended care program. This structure is particularly helpful for men who benefit from more time to practice sober routines, build life skills, and transition gradually back into school, work, or family responsibilities. Alumni support and aftercare planning help clients maintain connection and accountability once they leave campus.
Adventure and Experiential Therapy
Adventure therapy is a core part of the program, using the mountains, rivers, and forests as active partners in treatment. This includes guided activities such as hiking, canoeing, rock climbing, ropes courses, rafting, and optional solo camping. Experiential therapies, including animal and equine-assisted work, recreation therapy, yoga, and mindfulness, give clients practical tools for managing stress and finding sober ways to experience enjoyment and challenge.
Mental Health and Co-Occurring Conditions
Many clients arrive with both substance use and mental health conditions. Red Oak Recovery treats co-occurring disorders and process addictions such as gambling or problematic internet use. Individual, group, and psychoeducational sessions help clients understand how these issues interact, while nutrition counseling and holistic services support overall health.
Family Involvement and Community Connections
The family program invites loved ones into the healing process. Families learn about substance use, trauma, and mental health, and they work on communication, boundaries, and rebuilding trust. This focus on the family system can make it easier for clients to return home to a more stable and informed support network. Alumni events, peer connections, and opportunities for service work extend that community into long-term recovery.
