Residential Recovery for Adolescents

Newport Academy in Bethlehem, Connecticut, provides residential treatment for adolescents ages 12–18 who face substance use disorders or other mental health challenges. Staff members foster healing on the large, rural campus, where teens can leave behind everyday pressures and engage with nature as part of their therapy. The setting supports teens who need both structure and space to reconnect and recover.

Therapeutic and Experiential Programming

Each week, teens participate in about 30 hours of structured therapeutic activities. Clinicians deliver evidence-based therapies like dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), while experiential therapists lead equine and music therapy, cooking demonstrations, yoga, and outdoor adventure. These activities help teens process emotions, build trust, and develop real-world coping strategies.

Focus on Academics and Life Skills

Newport Academy keeps teens on track academically through a fully accredited educational program. Licensed teachers tailor their instruction to individual students’ needs and help teens develop life skills such as effective communication and time management. After leaving Newport Academy, teens are better prepared to navigate life at school and at home.

What To Know Before You Go

Some families describe Newport Academy as a turning point for their teen — highlighting strong clinical relationships, an emphasis on experiential and expressive therapies, and robust academic and family support. Others report frustrations with strict rules, limited communication, or inadequate response to complex needs. The program may work best for teens who can thrive in a highly structured, immersive environment and who benefit from strong family involvement throughout treatment.
