What to expect
Developing your care plan
- Admissions process: Before treatment, staff and clients meet over the phone for a 15–20-minute screening. This helps determine medical, mental health, and substance use background and needs, as well as any history of trauma and need for withdrawal management.
- Finding the right recovery track: Results from the assessment are used by doctors, nurses, therapists, and psychiatrists to create an adapted treatment plan. This includes specialized recovery tracks for veterans, professionals, and LGBTQIA+ individuals.
- Ongoing adjustments: As clients go through the program, their plans are reassessed every week to make sure everything is still a good fit. Changes can be made in real time to make sure evolving needs are addressed.
Who you will meet with
- Doctors and nurses: Nurses are available 24/7 to tend to clients’ medical needs. Doctors are on-site too to prescribe medications and see clients when appropriate.
- Psychiatrists: People who have primary or co-occurring mental health conditions meet with psychiatrists regularly. This can include psychiatric medication management when it fits the situation.
- Therapists and group counselors: A primary therapist is paired with each client, and counselors lead group sessions throughout the day.
- Case managers: Professional case managers can provide practical help with housing, employment, and legal resources so clients are securely set up after treatment ends.
Typical schedule
- Withdrawal management (detox): For clients who need withdrawal management as a first treatment step, emphasis is on getting through this process as safely and comfortably as possible. Medications for addiction treatment (MAT) can be prescribed to help ease cravings and symptoms.
- Evidence-based therapies: In both individual therapy sessions and groups, therapists and counselors use methods including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), motivational interviewing (MI), and trauma counseling.
- Holistic approaches: Art and music therapy and mindfulness are offered to complement evidence-based therapies, creating a holistic experience.
- Education and life skills: Educational groups include informative sessions on addiction, mental health, and recovery, and relapse prevention. Life skills groups are also held so clients are better prepared for independence after treatment.
Living experiences and amenities
- Accommodations and meals: The residence is designed to be hotel-like, with both private and shared room options and private bathrooms. Meals are nutritious and prepared by a chef, and clients have access to snacks and coffee throughout the day.
- Sports and activities: During free time, clients can play basketball, tennis, volleyball, softball, pickleball, and cornhole. Indoors, activities include puzzles, art, and crafts.
- Evening get-togethers: Clients often organize evening activities such as movie and spa nights or bingo.
- Biosound chair: This holistic relaxation method involves music and sounds, and is designed for better sleep and stress relief.
Aftercare
- Step-down continuum: Beyond residential care, River Oaks offers outpatient programs at a nearby facility. This includes partial hospitalization (PHP), intensive outpatient (IOP), and standard outpatient sessions. Sober living accommodations are available for clients enrolled in these outpatient programs.
- Alumni events: To keep peers connected after treatment, River Oaks has an alumni program that hosts events and support meetings. The program also has an app that alumni can use to coordinate get-togethers.
